You might be able to skip this step if your BMW has a key fob that you need to place in a slot on the steering column. Many of these key fobs include rechargeable batteries that are intended to be charged automatically while in use; as soon as the key fob is inserted into the ignition slot, the charging process begins.
However, if you have a more current fob, it is possible that the battery is a non-rechargeable CR 2450 and will need to be changed from time to time. Simply remove the rear panel of your fob and replace the coin cell battery to complete this easy DIY project.
A battery should last one to three years before needing to be replaced, depending on your car and usage.

Procedure
The metal blade key must be taken out of the fob. To open the key fob, use the metal key as a pry bar.
- Turn over the BMW remote. On the back of your BMW key, look. Under the back cover is where you’ll find the BMW key battery.
- Get rid of the battery cover.
- Delete the previous battery. To remove the battery, simply lift it out of the way.
- Replace the battery in the BMW key. Replace the old battery in the BMW key with the new one. Never force the battery into position. Use only light pressure when handling the battery.
- Put the remote away. The remote’s cover can be snapped back on.
Can you change the battery in your own BMW key?

For vehicles with EfficientDynamics, changes to the charging profile also impact how the Start/Stop system functions.
Car 1:
The battery is being replaced with an identical one. To inform the car that the battery is new, you register replacement so that the charging profile can be modified appropriately. If you don’t, the car will try to charge an outdated battery and eventually fail.
Car 2:
You replace a Standard LA battery with an AGM (or vice versa). Because the charging profile will be for the wrong sort of battery and accelerate battery failure, if you don’t register the replacement, it will toast the new battery for similar reasons to Car 1 but even worse. You MUST utilize a “conversion” in this scenario to switch the battery type. Register a replacement after that.
The vehicle must remain stationary with its new battery installed for at least 3 hours after a battery replacement. Until then, it is impossible to determine the new battery’s charge level with any degree of certainty. Possible The battery’s complete discharge-related Check Control signals are then hidden.
After a power supply interruption, some systems’ range of use may be constrained. Individual settings might also be lost.
Depending on the equipment specification, settings or activations are required. For instance:
- Autonomous engine start-stop function (MSA) vehicles: The MSA function is only operative after a learning period (the vehicle must not be awakened for approximately 6 hours).

Do BMW keys require programming?
Key fobs that have been activated as detailed above can only open your car manually and cannot be used with the Comfort Access feature in E Series BMWs and MINIs.
It is important to code your car to erase the old key profile and set the new key for Comfort Access use in order to activate your new key fob for use with Comfort Access. This can be done at your neighborhood BMW/MINI dealership or we can remotely code it for you.

What does a BMW key’s diamond button do?
Does anyone have any knowledge of what the key fob’s diamond button is meant to do?
The included manual is incredibly succinct. It refers to a “Headlight courtesy delay feature,” although it’s not entirely clear what this feature performs. “If the standby state is switched on and the high-beam headlights are enabled, the low-beam headlights remain on for an of time,” the text states. Even if “… for a period of time” is meant to be “… for a length of time,” that still doesn’t adequately describe what this feature is.
According to the description, it can only be used when the automobile has just been turned off and the high beams are on. However, when the car is locked, the button appears to have some effect. The inside lights occasionally come on. The headlights occasionally come on. It is quite unpredictable and challenging to duplicate.
What experiences do others have? Has anyone figured out what this button’s actual purpose is?
It is unfortunate that it cannot be set to perform things like open the windows or sunroof, switch on the heating, or other things!
Mine has two options (330e in Belgium): turn on the lights in the house or turn on the air conditioning. In the options for the car, I can select the default function.
It briefly illuminates the headlights in my automobile. Excellent for illuminating the path to your front entrance or finding your car at night in a big parking lot.
Check the “Home lights” setting under “Exterior Light Settings” on your iDrive to make sure it is not set to 0 seconds.
My headlights now turn on for 10 seconds when I hold the diamond button on the key because I set mine to that duration (G20 330i).
