The button is concealed in the speaker grille on the right side, adjacent to the cargo cover. The cover is released when you press it in. It’s a secret until you’ve done it once, at which point it becomes so obvious.
You know, given the time it took you to post the question, you could have found the answer in the manual’s.pdf file (mine is on page 324). I have a 2001 X5 with a factory-installed BMW cargo cover in the back. I need to remove it since I need to transport some very large products, but I’m not sure how.
The first time you take it off, it’s a little difficult, but slide the cargo cover all the way backwards toward the back seat. Line up both of the wheels that glide on the track within where the plastic seams terminate by keeping an eye on the end of the plastic seam, which is about an inch wide. When they are free of the tracks and brackets, push up. As I previously mentioned, it’s a little difficult the first time and feels like you might break it, but if it’s lined up it will pop out immediately.
Out of the track, there are two blocks. They are located closest to the back seat towards the track’s finish. It is necessary to pull the cover toward the back of the cargo area. You can find a trigger that releases the block by placing your finger horizontally in the track. It eliminates up front. The cover can then be pushed forward and away from the track. Putting it back together and aligning the cover with the track is the enjoyable part. Please let me know if you discover another method than trial and error.
In essence, move the cover as close as you can to the back seat before pushing up on one side. Pop out the opposite side when that exits the track. It will feel like you are breaking it the first few times, as was previously mentioned.
Last year, I got rid of mine, and I haven’t missed it since. Of course, my windows are also darkly tinted.

Step 3: Enter the trunk and search for the metal bar there.
You must crawl inside the trunk in order to open it from the inside. You might take a different approach or have someone else complete this stage if you are uncomfortable in small surroundings. Since you need to search for the horizontal metal bar, don’t forget to carry a flashlight. Look for the box next to the metal bar once you’ve found it.
Step 4: Use the screwdriver to open the box.
Once you’ve located the box, use the screwdriver to open it clockwise. The trunk will open on its own. Don’t forget to put everything back where it belongs after you exit the vehicle.
If you want to use a screwdriver to open a trunk from the outside, all you have to do is use a flathead screwdriver to pry open the latch. As soon as the screwdriver is in position, move it to the left and the right until the lock is unlocked. Your car’s trunk lock could be damaged by this procedure, though.
