Without a scanner, how do you read BMW error codes?
While turning the ignition key ON, press the Trip and Reset buttons on the odometer. Release the odometer Reset and Trip buttons after turning the key to the ON position to see if the Diagnostic Trouble Code, or DTC, shows up on the odometer display.

How are fault codes read?
The second character in the code indicates if the issue is a general one or one specific to a certain manufacturer. Look at the OBD code’s first two characters. The problem is generic if they are P0, P2, P34-P39, B0, B3, C0, C3, U0, or U3. The issue is particular to the manufacturer if they are P1, P30-P33, B1, B2, C1, C2, U1, or U2.
P0 or P1, which indicates that there is a problem in the powertrain system, will typically be the problem.
How are BMW diagnostics performed?
Whether you want to perform a complete ECUs diagnostic or only use the BMW cluster service menu to quickly reset data like the engine oil level or brake fluid level depends on your preferences.
Leave it to the BimmerTech experts if it’s the first one. That is, unless you are an expert at reading code lists from your control unit tree.
With the latter, you shouldn’t have any issues because there are no OBD plugs or additional devices needed to reset your BMW cluster service menu. Each series has an own way of doing things, but it all comes down to a few clicks on your odometer button in the end.
The G-Series menu for resetting your BMW service looks like this:
- Enter your vehicle and lock all the doors.
- Start the ignition, but leave the engine off.
- In a fast sequence, press the start/stop button three times.
- When the Service menu displays, continue to hold down the odometer reset button on the dash.
- Press and hold the odometer reset button to reset it.
- Press the button once more once the “Reset?” prompt appears.
Your service information, including the next scheduled general service date and the engine oil and brake fluid levels, is now being deleted.
Describe the BMW coding tool.
BMW iDrive coding, in its simplest form, entails modifying your car’s software in order to unlock new functions or modify how existing ones function. Unfortunately, the e46 and other older BMW vehicles are not currently supported by Bimmercode. They go back as far as the e9x 3 series. I used the Carly app to code both of my e46s back when I had them.
