If an engine won’t start but the starter motor is still working, the following process can be used to electronically unlock the parking lock on vehicles made after 09/2010 or updated with ISTA/D 2.39.0 or higher (intended integration level from 10-09-500):
1) Start the engine.
2) Depress the brake pedal and keep doing so throughout the rest of the procedure.
3) Select Start/Stop from the menu.
4) After the starter motor has been activated, push the unlock button on the GWS shifter’s left side and advance the shifter to position N.
Note: For vehicles with M57Y diesel engines and in cold weather, there may be a delay (of up to 4 seconds) before the N position is selected.
5) Keep pushing the GWS shifter in the direction of N until the audible gong and the CC message “Gearbox Malfunction” are heard. There’s a chance that P can’t be in the gearbox. It reads “Activate parking brake while car is stationary.”
6) After that, let go of the gearshift and choose N once more in the next six seconds. The instrument cluster then displays the gear position N.
7) Hold the brake pedal depressed until the starter motor stops turning. The car can then be maneuvered or pushed into the specified location after the brake pedal has been removed.
Important:
Once the aforementioned steps have been followed, the car can only be moved manually. Since the parking lock can activate and seriously harm the transmission, towing is not permitted.
8) Throughout this process, the ignition must always be turned on (KL 15). The Park gear position will automatically engage if the switch is switched OFF.
NOTE: If neutral position N cannot be reached, repeatedly turn the ignition on and off by pushing the Start/Stop button without applying brake pressure. Then repeat steps 1 through 7. A minimum 10-minute starting “cool-down” interval is necessary before trying again after three unsuccessful tries.
