I’m X3 driver. By pushing the button all the way up, you can start the sunroof (the same position that is use for vent). The button must be held down for at least 30 seconds. The cassette should be in the vent position before moving to completely open, fully close, and then back to vent position. Release the button after it has reached the completely closed position. All there is to it is that. I’m happy to see that BMW looks out for its customers.

That worked perfectly! When you press and hold the middle of the button for roughly a minute, the roof cycles through every potential open/close configuration. By doing this, the problem was resolved, and the shade now opens fully on the first try! yay.
