I own a N52 as well. I gave my PE a test run before installing it while the old muffler was removed. It was terrible. Droned so hard I was unable to think clearly. Volume alone does not matter. You seek a pleasing sound. The PE is the best n52 exhaust, in my opinion, but it is expensive. The AA muffler would be an excellent middle ground. You could use secondary cat delete to get even more volume.
It sounds nice to me. A 328XI with a muffler and resonator deletion belongs to me. Except when I’m flooring it, I don’t really deal with drones like that. Nothing, though, when coasting. However, I don’t particularly mind drones. However, I hear a lot of pops, and they are neither loud nor ricey. I want to increase the volume but without ruining it.
Great sound comes from the Active Autowerke exhaust! Simply swap the factory muffler out for a Magnaflow or Borla muffler if you want something less expensive. Although Borla is said to drone a little less than Magnaflow, I haven’t yet heard it on these autos.

It’s kind of a dead topic, but I read through several of them before deciding to delete the muffler on my n52 e92, so I’m posting this in the hopes that it will help someone else. I’m delighted I made this decision because it cost less than $150 (with new tips) and there was barely any additional cabin noise (mostly heard on drivers side). Although the tone is less refined than that of the PE or something comparable, it is still a very beautiful deep tone that will give you a few pops and gurgles without sounding like your neighbors slammed their Civic. In conclusion, do it. If you genuinely detest it, you may always pay an additional $70 or so to get your stock muffler put back on.

Having seen them, I truly enjoy them. Think it could be too “rice,” do you people think. Since the mpe isn’t loud enough, I think the sound is much better. And how much louder than the mpe would it be?
Instead of using a muffler deletion, why not opt for a real cat-back exhaust? The MPE is renowned for being conservative in terms of noise, but there are a ton of different options available (just do a quick search on the site), all of which would produce much more sophisticated noises than a straight pipe. Straight pipes, in my opinion, are not appropriate for a small turbo 4-banger.
