First off, I sincerely hope that this isn’t a repost because I’ve tried several yearbook solutions in vain to solve this issue.

My 2009 model 120d has the Professional head unit, which has Bluetooth for calling but annoyingly disallows audio streaming. I have a USB port, but since I don’t own an Apple product, it serves no purpose other than as decoration unless I utilize a USB drive. I have an Aux-in port as well, but I detest having cables running everywhere! The only problem with trying to solve this is that I don’t want to lose my ability to make Bluetooth calls while looking for a solution.

Anyway, I’ve managed to come up with a fairly effective and affordable solution to this problem, and if your specifications are close to mine, you should have no trouble copying it.

I considered mounting a Bluetooth receiver on the windshield cradle of my car, connecting it to the Aux-in plug, and wirelessly streaming music from my phone.

Before anything else, I got this: Aves Mercury Bluetooth Wireless Stereo Audio Receiver with 3.5mm Jack for Speakers.

It arrived this morning and is a reasonably priced, compact, well-kept device. Everything you need is included, with the exception of a USB cord (luckily, I had several of those lying around anyway)

I connected it to the USB and Aux ports beneath my armrest, and the device had a wonderful little home in the leather pocket there (if you have one of those)

I connected the Bluetooth receiver to my Sony Xperia Z3+ phone and began playing Spotify songs. The playback is instant, the quality is amazing, and everything is really fluid. Most crucially, because this gadget lacks a built-in microphone (unlike other of them), it automatically switches to your in-car Bluetooth when you make or receive a call. Winner!

The only ‘problem’ is that there is still no track-skipping functionality through the steering wheel/head unit because your car still thinks it is just an Aux input.

I’ll have to keep an eye on battery depletion because the USB under the armrest appears to constantly be powered, even when the ignition is off.

This should assist a few individuals in fixing the annoying problem with this car. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have, and I will do my best to respond.

Has the BMW I own a combox?

You may learn how to use your BMW head unit by watching the video below. If your map data version has “Premium” inscribed on it, your head unit is a CIC.

CIC (Pro Nav) – If your car has a CIC head unit installed, you’ll need a factory-installed combox.

The carpet in the boot must be taken out in order to determine whether your automobile has a combox installed (please do not ask us to check via VIN, please follow the steps below).

  • Open the boot and remove all of your stuff before continuing.
  • The boot liner carpet readily pulls out, so remove it completely and lay it down.
  • The flat supporting hard board in the boot should be removed, not just lifted up.
  • The item circled on the left in the image above is the combox (just forward of the battery). A fuse box will be visible to the right if you are searching in the proper spot (just forward of the battery).
  • You don’t have a combox if the area to the left of the fuse box is empty.
  • If the combox in the circle is installed. Great! You can be coded.

Unfortunately, due to the length of time and complexity of the installation, we do not refit comboxes.

The cost of the coding retrofit, PS91.67 + VAT, remains the same if the combox is already in place. For PS91.67 plus VAT, we can currently add this extended Bluetooth option to your car. Simply phone one of our team members at 0118 958 3481, and they will schedule you.
