How can I tell whether the Bluetooth in my BMW is upgraded?
Did you know that in 2000, the first car with Bluetooth was introduced? (No, it wasn’t a BMW; a Chrysler only.) And even after 18 years, this technology remains one of the most crucial ways to integrate your phone’s capabilities into your preferred vehicle.
Depending on the package or the car configurations you select, BMWs come with two different sorts of features: Bluetooth Basics and Bluetooth Enhanced (EBT).
Please be aware that your model, phone, and even the network operator have a significant impact on the EBT features. While some BMWs with Enhanced Bluetooth may be restricted to fewer functions than are typically attributed to this technology, other vehicles with Basic Bluetooth may have more options than they should. Check the BMW Bluetooth compatibility page to find out exactly what you will receive with the EBT Bluetooth audio update. Keep in mind that this list is constantly subject to change; each BMW Bluetooth software update may include new functions, and updating the operating system on your phone may affect the functionality available to you in your vehicle.

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), which was established in 1998 and now publishes and advertises the standard and its updates, was founded. At originally, the Bluetooth SIG only had Ericsson, IBM, Intel, Nokia, and Toshiba as members; but, by the end of its first year, there were 4,000. Devices started arriving on the market not long after the Bluetooth SIG was established. Over 30,000 companies at various levels of influence are currently part of the association.
Even though Bluetooth was created in 1994, the first Bluetooth phone didn’t appear on store shelves until 2001.
Following a timeline of significant Bluetooth events, there is additional information about each era:
- 1999: In 1999, Bluetooth 1.0, the initial Bluetooth specification, was released.
- Bluetooth was initially introduced on a mobile phone in 2001 with the Sony Ericsson T36.
- In 2004, Bluetooth 2.0 and Enhanced Data Rate (EDR), which increased both range and bandwidth, were released.
- High Speed transfers were a feature of Bluetooth 3.0 launched in 2009 that allowed devices to continue using Bluetooth while transferring files over Wi-Fi. This significantly increased transfer speeds from the previous iterations to 23 Mbit/s.
- 2013 saw the adoption of Bluetooth 4.0 by the Bluetooth SIG and the addition of an optional Low Energy (LE) mode for battery-operated portable devices like wearables. A Classic variation was created from the default, longer range implementation.
- Launch of Bluetooth 5 in 2017, which carries on the legacy of enhancing both the range and transmission rates for Classic and Low Energy flavors.
