I’ve read complaints from BMW shops about “calibrating” the 535i’s replacement injectors. Normal injectors do not need to be coded for, according to my theory, but high pressure/direct injection injectors need. However, I cannot guarantee this.
The injectors were altered by BMW at some time, so if you have the old ones, you can’t simply swap one for a new one. The whole set has to be changed. I’m sure you can get more information if you do some searching. I am not immediately aware of the part numbers.

Do I need BMW’s assistance to re-code if I replace one of my fuel injectors with the same model (part number 13537585261) that is currently on my car?

After replacing an injector, I took it to an ind shop a few months later for other work and asked them to code the injector; however, they were unable to do so. I regularly drive the car and have taken it to two track days. I don’t notice any issues or a difference in how the car drives.
You require INPA! I downloaded it for free from a post, and I paid about $40 for a cable on eBay. Code injectors are only one of the many things it can accomplish. It’s possible to run that one cylinder richer or leaner. You only get one oxygen sensor for three cylinders, so even a 3% error would be around half a point of AFR.
For instance, if your new injector had a lower flow rate, the ECU would still supply fuel to all three cylinders on that oxygen sensor, but that one would still be somewhat richer than the other two. In that one cylinder, there may be explosion or significant ignition correction. If the problem is severe enough, it could result in a CEL, misfires, etc.

Where can I locate my injector code?

Why then use the injector code? The injector code is a code that is programmed on the ECU for precise communication and injection control. It is commonly referred to as the IMA code (Bosch and Siemens) or the calibration code (Delphi). Vehicle manufacturers have been compelled to more precisely manage the flow of fuel entering the engine in order to maximize the efficiency of the combustion process and regulate emissions within permissible limits as a result of the ever-increasing emission legislation and tightening of limitations.
Industry standard IMA (Injector Menge Abgleichung / Injector Quantity Offset) coding is used. When an injector passes the original equipment test, it outputs an IMA code that indicates where the needle and nozzle assembly is adjusted within the tolerance range. This information enables the ECU to adjust fuel properly and improve engine performance. Several issues can arise if the injectors are not encoded:
Performance – You might be able to drive on some systems without seeing any differences. In reality, it is doubtful that the client would attain optimum vehicle performance if the injectors have not been coded. After some time, mistakes can happen.
No start – In more recent systems, the car won’t start if you don’t enter the injector codes.
Low performance or inconsistent engine operation could result from the injectors not being coded, in which case the ECU would continue dosing as if the old injector were still in place.
Common Rail Injectors from DELPHI – Always need engine coding. 16 alphanumeric characters (for C2i injectors) or 20 characters (for newer applications) constitute a typical code (C3i injectors). The injector head is typically where the code is located.
The majority of DENSO Common Rail injectors require coding, while some very early models might not. Depending on the manufacturer of the car, a typical code length is 16–24 alphanumeric characters. The injector connector is often where the code is located. For this information, you can also scan the QR code on the injector.
VDO/Siemens Common Rail Injectors – At the moment, only VW applications need coding. The injector head is where you’ll find the normal length of six digits.
The majority of BOSCH Common Rail Injectors require coding, while some earlier models might not. Simply put, the injector needs coding if the IMA code is present. The injector connector head is where you’ll find the code, which is typically 6 to 10 digits long.
Note that the information about coding above pertains to brand-new diesel injectors. If an authorized service expert sells you a remanufactured injector, it will also come with a new calibration code, which is often applied to the injector as a sticker or label.
