I’m new to the site and bmws, however I was wondering if there was a way to remove brake dust and embedded grime from rims or if I would need to get some new ones. Although not too awful, it is apparent. I appreciate it.
The key is to just use what is absolutely necessary to remove the brake dust and dirt (which is the hardest part of it). Of course, you should only use steel wool or similar materials as a last resort. The clearcoat or other protective coating that is on your alloy wheels is something you DO NOT want to remove. They would look beautiful if you used steel wool on them today for a month or two before they started to deteriorate due to the removal of the protective coating and pitting in the allow.
Steel wool is good IF you have chrome aftermarket wheels, but you should only use acid-based “Chrome Wheel Cleaners” sparingly (most say on the container, rinse off in 30 seconds due to acid destroying the surface, your tires, etc.).
Look closely at your wheels for any indications of rust, corrosion, inappropriate cleaning techniques, etc. Then, start by cleaning the wheel that appears to be in the finest condition, which is generally one of the rears. Examining and cleaning are made simpler by removing it from the car.
A standard brush, a bottle brush or wheel brush, a sponge, and a strong solution of Dove dish detergent in HOT water are all good places to start. Clean a tiny area that is NOT too damaged, and then evaluate the finish’s condition. From there, modify your plan of action.
Anything more abrasive than a plastic “scrunge” is not something I would use. If there is anything foreign on the wheel, such as tar or tree sap, try to identify it and apply the proper solvent.
Hopefully, the results you achieve using Dove and a lot of rubbing with a brush or sponge will surprise you.
Examine the brake pad material you are using and try to discover the one that produces the least dust (ceramic? ), while still providing you with enough brake performance and feel, when/IF you DO get them cleaned or replaced. I’m not sure why, but BMW front brakes have always seemed to produce the dirtiest front wheels of any car on the road for YEARS. That seems to have altered (in a small way?).

What is the ideal method for cleaning aluminum wheels?
Aluminum wheels can have a chrome-like luster when meticulously cleaned and polished. Aluminum responds nicely to polishing because it is one of the softer metals. You should frequently clean and polish your aluminum wheels if you want to keep them in good shape. Here are some details on the ideal method for cleaning aluminum wheels.
Clean the aluminum wheels on your car before washing it. Cleaning the aluminum wheels first will stop dirt and dust from contaminating your freshly cleaned car. These are the procedures to clean aluminum wheels.
- Rinse the aluminum wheels with water. This will clear the wheels of any loose dirt and dust. To produce a strong spray of water, a nozzle should be used. Wash the brake calipers, spokes, and every nook and cranny of a wheel.
- Spraying the wheels with an aluminum wheel cleaner is advised. Cleaner needs to be non-acidic. The wheel may be effectively cleaned using a non-acidic solution without spotting.
- The wheel should next be cleaned using a wheel brush with gentle bristles. Avoid cleaning the wheel with a brush that has stiff bristles. Aluminum will probably be scratched by harsh bristles, and polishing will require a lot of effort to remove the scratches. The filth and grime will be loosened by a brush’s gentle bristles without damaging the wheel polish.
- Dry the wheels well. Wheels with water stains seem ugly. To protect the wheel polish and get rid of any stray brake dust, use a microfiber towel. To clean the aluminum wheels without damaging the towel, you should ideally use a black towel. If you want to dry your car without getting brake dust on the paint, use a different towel.
What is the best way to clean my rim?
Utilize a degreaser and cleaners like dish soap and baking soda to get rid of road debris, grease, and tar! Use a soft cloth and a solution of dish soap and water to clean your rims. Next, coat your rims with baking soda and a sponge’s rough side before rinsing them off.
However, exercise caution since baking soda and the abrasive side of the sponge could scratch your rims.
How are BMW wheels polished?
- Step 1: Spray your preferred all-purpose cleaner on the tire and let it set for 10 seconds.
- Step 2: Use a medium-hard, damp brush to scrub the tire.
- Step 3: Spray Wheel Cleaner on the rim and let it set for 20 seconds.
- Step 4: Use a soft/medium moist brush or wand to scrub the rim.
How frequently should rims be cleaned?
Every time you wash your car, we advise giving your wheels a simple cleaning with soap and water and a special wash mitt. Every two to three months, thoroughly clean your wheels and add layer(s) of protection.
Are black rims challenging to maintain?
Wheels with black accents are stunning. But they are vulnerable to scratches, much like a black car. Due to the nature of their position on a vehicle, they are actually more prone to scratches. Wheels are frequently misused. Compared to bodywork, rims gather significantly more road debris and pollutants during brake shearing. A freshly polished black wheel will almost certainly get scratched during a wash. Even with careful caution, you run the chance of getting scratched.
In our opinion, the only practical way to safeguard those gorgeous wheels is to have a superior surface coating applied to them. While it may not completely prevent scratches, this is the greatest alternative available (and not just for wheels) and greatly lowers the likelihood of getting those unsightly scratches.
On a typical car, wheels get too dirty and need too much harsh cleaning to worry about scratching the beautiful black surface. If you want to go about with shiny black on your automobile, we advise coating it or just being ready for anything. Consider matte black if you’re just intent on throwing a set of black rims on your corners because the matte finish doesn’t reveal scratches as badly.
Is WD40 effective for cleaning wheels?
Is WD-40 Safe for Cleaning Wheels? WD-40 is a secure wheel cleaning, yes! It is safe, but you must take care to follow the right procedures. It shouldn’t be replaced with specific wheel cleaners, but it will be a good addition to your collection of alloy wheel cleaners.
How can I maintain bright rims?
Apply a high-quality wheel protectant, such as BLACKFIRE SiO2 Wheel Seal or Wheel Wax, once your wheels are clean and dry to seal the surface. These compounds function similarly to automobile wax. Utilizing an applicator pad, apply them, and then buff the wheel. They maintain the luster of your wheels and keep brake dust from sticking. Your wheels continue to appear cleaner. These treatments require weekly reapplication, but it’s preferable than washing your wheels every other day. The good news is that water is all you need to clean your wheels in between waxings if you use a wheel wax as directed.
Can I wash my rims with Dawn?
Any ride can become boring if the wheels and rims are dirty. Thankfully, Dawn(r) cleans messes that have been baked on or broken on. Therefore, make a quick pit break to remove the brake dust and make the wheels and tire rims look brand new.
Can wheels be harmed by wheel cleaner?
If you’ve ever gone on an extended hike, you know that your feet—the only body part that makes touch with the ground—are the most crucial “tools” you have. They must perform their duties with every action you take. Your time on the trail may not be enjoyable if your boots do not fit properly or if you have a blister. You must therefore devote time to caring for your feet. Your car is the same way. Your four thousand-pound machine is connected to the ground by its wheels and tires. They also receive a beating. They therefore require the same level of maintenance as the rest of your car.
Today, the majority of passenger cars come standard with attractive alloy wheels, often known as “rims,” when they leave the showroom. A huge variety of styles are available from aftermarket businesses as well. In addition to being more fashionable than the old, bulky steel wheels, these new aluminum or magnesium wheels also weigh less and increase fuel efficiency.
However, they require more maintenance than standard steel wheels do. Some alloy wheels have a clearcoat finish. Others aren’t coated. Others have been anodised. Each is vulnerable to harm from debris, salt, abrasion, and brake dust’s caustic effects. Alloy wheels are susceptible to damage from harsh cleaning methods and contaminant exposure, including pitting, corrosion, and discolouration. Therefore, just like the gleaming and pricey paint finish that covers the rest of your car, it is crucial that your wheels be cleaned and preserved regularly and effectively. However, they are frequently disregarded, much like the underbody. Additionally, cleaning your wheels improperly might worsen the situation and do more harm than good.
Why is there so much brake dust on my BMW?
BMW employs soft pads, which is the cause of the dust. It’s more for lessening disc wear than for better breaking. It costs far less to replace discs than to replace softer pads more frequently with tougher pads.
What gets rid of brake dust?
- Make sure the wheels and brakes are cool to the touch and away from the sun.
- Rinse the wheels to remove any heavy contaminants or dirt.
- Make The Right Brake Dust Cleaner Selection.
- Wait after applying brake dust cleaner to your wheels.
- Gently scrub the wheel using a soft brush.

As you can see in the image above, when brake dust comes into touch with SONAX Wheel Cleaner, it turns red.
To stir the cleaner, use a gentle wheel brush. Here, a Speed Master Wheel Brush was employed.
