How frequently should you check the motorcycle’s oil level?

Check your owner’s manual to make sure how the dipstick should be inserted for an accurate reading on engines with dipsticks. Typically, you’ll wipe the stick before inserting it into the case up until the point where the threads of the filler plug come into contact. If the plug is not straight and the bike is not level, the readout may not be correct.

You only need to look a bit closer to learn as much from a dipstick as from a sight glass.

You should check your bike’s oil at least once every week if you ride it frequently. If you don’t ride much, you might think about inspecting before each trip. Regular inspections make it more likely that you will catch little problems early on before they worsen.

  • The ideal color is nice and amber, just like the day it was poured from the bottle.
  • Oil that is dark or black has to be replaced.
  • A milky white color in the oil often suggests coolant has gotten into it, which could be a sign of a burst head gasket or another serious engine issue.
  • Take it to the shop if it starts to smell like gas.
  • If the engine has suddenly started using oil, it may indicate valve or piston-ring issues, the root of which needs to be determined.
