Always check the oil level on the center stand or with the motorbike level.
The gauge won’t be accurate if you examine it on the side stand because the oil would be higher there. In my instance, the 2013 sight glass will be completely full when placed on the side stand, giving the impression that it is overfilled. The oil level appears between the lines of the circle on the sight glass while it is on the center stand, and this is accurate.
To get the most accurate result, the owners handbook advises checking the oil once while it is operating temperature. To ensure there is at least enough oil in the engine to prevent damage, it is advisable to check the oil level before starting the engine.
When oil is cold, it expands and should not be poured all the way to the top of the sight class circle because when the oil warms up and is checked at operating temperature, the sight class will be fully filled, which is overfilled.

How can you tell if your oil is running low?
Check the owner’s handbook first, then adhere to the advice of the manufacturer. Some more recent vehicles lack a standard dipstick for manual oil inspection in favor of an electronic oil monitor.
If you decide to check the oil manually, ensure sure the vehicle is level and, in the case of most cars, that the engine is cool to avoid getting burned on a hot engine component. (For some vehicles, the automaker advises checking the oil once the engine has warmed up.) Find the dipstick by opening the hood of the automobile while it is not running. Remove the dipstick from the engine and clean the end of it of any oil. The dipstick should then be fully inserted back into its tube.
Once more removing it, check both sides of the dipstick to see whether there is oil on the tip this time. Whether it be two pinholes, the letters L and H (low and high), the acronyms MIN and MAX, or simply a crosshatched region, every dipstick has a manner of showing the right oil level. The level is acceptable if the top of the oil “streak” is located between the two markers or inside the crosshatched region.
However, you must add oil in the manner specified below if the oil level is below the minimal level.
Examine the oil’s color as well. It should be brown or black in color. However, if it seems light and milky, coolant may be leaking into the engine. Additionally, pay particular attention for any metal fragments, as these could indicate internal engine damage. Get the vehicle to a mechanic for a more thorough examination if you notice one of these issues. The automobile should be towed if you think there is a coolant leak.
If everything is in order, re-clean the dipstick and re-insert it into the tube, making sure it is completely seated. You’re done when you close the hood.
How can you tell when your motorcycle’s oil is running low?
You should keep an eye out for a few symptoms that could mean your motorcycle is running short on gas. It’s critical that you get familiar with these warning signs because your motorcycle’s survival may depend on your ability to spot them right away.
You should inspect the motorcycle’s dip stick as part of routine maintenance. The end of the majority of dip sticks will include an indication that will let you know if you need oil or not. If it indicates that you have insufficient oil, you must immediately add more.

An overheated engine may occasionally be an indication of low oil. You might be low on oil if your engine is overheating and you have a gauge that indicates this or if it is emitting smoke or other telltale overheating symptoms.
If your engine is solely air cooled, it is crucial that you address this right away. A motorcycle engine may overheat in certain circumstances, such as on hot days or in heavy traffic, but you should also check the oil level while you’re there to be safe.
Any time you hear a clunking noise, you should stop your motorcycle right away and investigate what caused it. The sound of metal rubbing or hitting another object is an evident sign of low motorcycle oil since it indicates that the engine’s internal parts aren’t receiving enough lubrication.
Burning metal odors could also be a sign of low oil. When metal is being welded or chopped using a grinder, the smell is similar to the smell of burning metal. If you ever notice a scent like that, stop right away and examine the condition of your oil. Your engine’s pistons may be the source of the burning metal odor.
How frequently should you check the motorcycle’s oil level?
Even though modern motorcycles are highly dependable, you still need to check a few things to maintain them operating to their best capability. One thing you should never overlook is the engine oil. You wouldn’t want to operate a high-revving, aerospace-manufactured, and incredibly expensive to replace engine without the proper lubricant, after all. Additionally, even a rookie mechanic with a little knowledge may learn a lot from an engine’s oil about the state of its internals.
Look in the owner’s manual for instructions on how to actually check an engine’s oil level. In all seriousness, it will detail the particulars that the manufacturer suggests, and they do differ slightly from bike to bike. However, there is a general structure to the steps.

Verify that the engine has been warmed up to operating temperature. Wait a few minutes after shutting it off to let the oil flow down from the top end. In order to check that the oil level on a bike with a sight glass is between the two markers on the case, you must hold the bike level (either from the saddle or next to it) and look through the window, which is conveniently situated on the bottom of the engine. (Tip: If your bike has a sight glass in addition to a centerstand, measure it as described above, and then compare it to the level indicated when standing on the centerstand. In this manner, while the vehicle is parked on the centerstand in your garage, you may use that level as a reference to check the oil level.)

Check your owner’s manual to make sure how the dipstick should be inserted for an accurate reading on engines with dipsticks. Typically, you’ll wipe the stick before inserting it into the case up until the point where the threads of the filler plug come into contact. If the plug is not straight and the bike is not level, the readout may not be correct.
You only need to look a bit closer to learn as much from a dipstick as from a sight glass.
You should check your bike’s oil at least once every week if you ride it frequently. If you don’t ride much, you might think about inspecting before each trip. Regular inspections make it more likely that you will catch little problems early on before they worsen.
- The ideal color is nice and amber, just like the day it was poured from the bottle.
- Oil that is dark or black has to be replaced.
- A milky white color in the oil often suggests coolant has gotten into it, which could be a sign of a burst head gasket or another serious engine issue.
- Take it to the shop if it starts to smell like gas.
- If the engine has suddenly started using oil, it may indicate valve or piston-ring issues, the root of which needs to be determined.
