The New York car show is where the 2011 BMW 5-Series will make its North American premiere the following week. BMW revealed prices for two of the three sedan variants ahead of the vehicle’s June sales launch.
Although the 2011 BMW 5-Series has several improvements over the previous generation, including two new engines and a new transmission, BMW actually reduced the costs for the 535i and 550i sedan variants. The current starting prices for the 550i and 535i are $60,575, respectively.
BMW’s new dual-scroll single-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six, the N55, replaces the current twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six, known as the N54, in the new 535i. Additionally, it has a six-speed manual transmission or the brand-new ZF eight-speed automatic. A number of BMW’s EfficientDynamics components are present in the new vehicle, including on-demand operation of engine accessory drives, electronic power steering, and regenerative braking. Despite these modifications and extra features, the new 535i costs $1650 less than the previous 535i ($50,475 vs. $52,125).
The 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 seen in the 750i and 550i GT is available in the 5-Series’ 550i form. It has an eight-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission, just like the 535i. In order to increase fuel efficiency, it also has all of the same EfficientDynamics features as the 535i. The 550i’s price has been dropped for 2011 from $61,475 to $60,575 inclusive of destination and handling.
Interestingly, there won’t be a M Sport option available for the new 2011 model (when the car launches at least). However, the sport package is still available for the 535i and 550i for $2200, a $700 price cut. Driving dynamics control, electronic damper management, and active roll stabilization are all a part of the sport package. Additional sporty options include a $2700 dynamic handling package (BMW has not specified how this differs from the sport package) and a $500 sport-tuned eight-speed automatic transmission.
There are, of course, other luxurious options, such as active ventilated seats ($2950), a cold weather package ($1050) that includes a heated steering wheel, heated seats, and headlamp washers, and a new convenience package ($1700) that BMW does not provide any details on. Additionally, there are two premium packages; the first is standard on the 550i’s higher trim level and costs $1800 on the 535i, while the second costs $4900 on the 535i and $2800 on the 550i. There are also many other standalone solutions available.
The price of the base 528i, which sports a 3.0-liter inline-six with naturally aspirated engine, has not yet been disclosed. Next week at the New York International Auto Show, the 2011 BMW 5-Series will make its North American debut before going on sale in June.
