There are numerous, mostly excellent, options in the mid-size luxury SUV sector, but the 2023 BMW X5 stands out for a combination of performance and refinement that’s lacking in many crossovers. Driving fanatics might choose to pursue a true performance player like the Porsche Cayenne, but due to its all-around excellence, the swift, well-rounded X5 ranks close to the top of the class.

Three alternative engines are available for the X5. A turbocharged six-cylinder engine with 335 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque powers the xDrive40i variants. Given the size of the car, it is surprising that it can reach highway speeds in just 5.7 seconds when coupled with the eight-speed automatic and the standard xDrive all-wheel-drive system. With a total fuel efficiency of 10.4 L/100 km, it is also surprisingly effective. The xDrive45e, on the other hand, combines the six-cylinder engine with a more sophisticated electrical system, making it an even more economical X5. The xDrive45e model’s ability to travel 50 km on electric power alone is the greatest feature. The two systems combine to produce 389 horsepower. The X5 M50i variant, which comes with a 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 engine, is the last one. Its 523 horsepower reduces the time needed for a motorway sprint to only 4.3 seconds. Naturally, this motor is the least effective, with combined settings yielding 12.7 L/100 km.
