BMW brand model sales increased 4.2 percent in 2017 to 2.09 million passenger cars and SUVs, the Munich-based automaker reported on Friday. Mercedes DAIGn.DE, which retained the top spot in the global luxury-car sales rankings for a second year, saw sales increase 9.9 percent to 2.29 million.
Volkswagen’s luxury Audi NSUG.DE division said on Friday that registrations increased 0.6 percent to a record 1.88 million vehicles, benefiting by a 34-percent December increase in China, the brand’s largest market.
Deliveries were boosted by a 9.6 percent increase for its SUV lineup and a 15 percent increase for the 1-Series, according to BMW, which held the top spot in luxury sales for over a decade before losing ground to Mercedes in 2016.
Pieter Nota, the new sales head who took over for Ian Robertson on January 1st, expressed his confidence that BMW sales would increase throughout 2018 while maintaining a focus on profitability.

BMW’s M Division might expand more in the upcoming year, particularly if M Performance cars remain an option. 2018 will see the release of the F90-generation BMW M5, which should, despite its high price, be a popular vehicle. 2018 could possibly see the release of the BMW Z4 M40i, depending on when the M Performance model is released by the automaker. 2018 should be a good year for the brand if that goes on sale.
Additionally, BMW should introduce the new 3 Series in time for 2018. If so, the BMW M340i should also be a big growth spurt for the company.
