Prior to its premiere at the LA Auto Show in January 2020, the BMW M2 CS, a version of the BMW M2 Competition that is more track-oriented, was first made public online in November 2019. With 2,200 units planned for North America, Europe, Asia, and Mexico, production commenced in March 2020. According to data gathered from VIN numbers on Bimmerpost, only around 564 made it to the United States.
The M2 CS utilizes the same engine as the M2 Competition but with factory ECU management from the F82 M4 Competition package. This results in a more potent version of the S55 that is rated at 331 kW (444 hp) and 550 Nm (406 lbft) of torque (the same torque as the other M models fitted with the S55 engine). Vehicles with a six-speed manual transmission accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.2 seconds, while models with a seven-speed dual clutch transmission do so in 4.0 seconds.
Although ceramic brakes are an option, the rotors and calipers from the M Performance Brakes option from the M2 Competition are retained as standard. Standard features include an electronic locking differential and an adaptive M suspension. The transmission tunnel is composed of carbon fiber as an extra weight-saving measure, and the wheel hubs and control arms are made of forged aluminum. A carbon-fibre composite is used to make the hood, roof, and many aerodynamic components. Additionally brand-new, the active exhaust system distinguishes it from other M2 models, as do the distinctive wheel designs in high-gloss Jet black or matte gold finishes. Michelin Cup 2 tires are also an option.
The seats are made of leather and Alcantara with red contrast stitching, and the center console is likewise made of carbon fiber with Alcantara trim and an embroidered red “CS” insignia. The steering wheel also has contrast stitching on it. For a slight weight reduction, the rear AC vents and center armrest that come standard on the M2 and M2 Competition have been eliminated.
The M2 CS has received high praise from auto critics and was chosen as the Evo Car of the Year 2020 over a number of supercars made by Porsche and McLaren.

San Luis Potosi Plant will be the only location where the BMW M2 is made.
The future 2023 BMW M2 will only be produced at the San Luis Potosi facility in Mexico, according to a confirmation from BMW today. At the new facility, where the BMW G20 3 Series has already been produced since 2019, the new BMW G87 M2 will join the 2 Series Coupe. In 2021, the facility in Mexico has raised production by 25%. The plant will launch a second production shift in 2022 and hire an additional 800 workers.
President and CEO of BMW Group Factory San Luis Potosi Harald Gottsche made the following remarks at the unveiling of a camouflaged BMW M2: “Now that our Mexican plant will produce M vehicles for the entire world, we are thrilled to take part in the 50th anniversary festivities for M. By producing the BMW M2’s second generation exclusively for the international market, San Luis Potosi once again demonstrates its excellent human talent capacity, and our dedication to the state’s growth and development is reaffirmed.”
The San Luis Potosi Plant is the most recent production facility in the company’s worldwide network. It was intended to be easily adaptable to the fabrication of many models from the beginning of its design and construction. Two years after the Plant’s production began, it has already widened its scope to include the production of plug-in hybrid cars. The infrastructure of the Plant was increased by $125 million so that this second model could be added to the production line. Since 2019, 170,000 BMW 3 Series automobiles have been produced in Mexico, accounting for 3% of all BMW vehicles produced worldwide.
The brand-new 2023 BMW M2 Competition is among the most significant introductions this year, at least in the context of the BMW world. The initial information will be made public in a few short months, but some of the technical specifications are already available. There will be a six-speed manual and an eight-speed automatic transmission available for the upcoming BMW M2. Essentially the same possibilities as the new M3/M4 models.
The next M2 will have about 455 horsepower in base form, with Competition, CS, and even CSL models to follow. We anticipate that the regular M4 will have 406 lb-ft of torque. These power numbers will make room above the M2 Competition for additional variants like a new BMW M2 CS and perhaps the first-ever BMW M2 CSL.
BMW M2 CS: The American market has reserved about 400 vehicles.
The lifespan of the BMW M2 CS will be relatively brief. The extremely restricted sports coupe will hit the market this year and make its debut in the European market in early November 2020. Up to 2021, the U.S. market will continue to receive new units.
The allocation figures for the U.S. market are, of course, the topic of everyone’s inquiries. While the precise number hasn’t been determined, a source close to the corporation claims that 400 units are likely to end up in the hands of American customers.
The initial projection for the M2 CS unit count was 500, but as always, production schedules are subject to change. The BMW M2 CS is not artificially constrained in any manner, and most production-related limitations will affect how many units may be produced at a time. The current production schedule for the BMW M2 CS calls for a total of 2,200 units.
The BMW 1M, which was initially expected to run in far smaller numbers than the approximately 6,000 vehicles built, experienced the exact same thing.
The BMW M2 CS will start at an expensive EUR95,000 in Europe. The BMW M2 CS has an MSRP of $83,600 in the US plus $995 for destination. Even yet, it’s anticipated that most markets would sell out soon despite the hefty price.
The track-oriented solutions implemented and the power increase for the BMW S55 straight-six engine up to 450 PS / 444 hp are what distinguish the M2 CS from the M2 Competition. The M2 CS adopts the entire BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line kit for its exterior, including gleaming black kidney grille and side window ornaments.
The BMW M2 CS also has a front splitter made of carbon fiber, a hood with a central air vent made of carbon fiber, and a sandwich-style roof made of CFRP. The rear diffuser, external mirror covers, and boot-mounted Gurney-style spoiler are all made of carbon fiber. Additional optimizations to the exhaust system included a quad architecture and engraved M emblems on each pipe.
Later this year, we should be able to drive an M2 CS for a thrilling experience.
The Specifics
The engine in the 2023 M2 is roughly the same as the standard M3/M4 engine, according to BMW, and the wheelbase is 4.3 inches shorter than the M4 coupe’s. Although output ratings have not yet been determined, expect them to be slightly detuned due to corporate hierarchical constraints (the intake and exhaust tracts are not physically constrained). There is no corporate directive mandating that its weight-to-power ratio fall below that of its siblings, and we are advised to anticipate that this M2 will perform more closely to peak M3 levels than any previous M2 model. It will undoubtedly weigh less, and it doesn’t have to.
The new 2023 BMW M2, which is tuned to be more agile and nimble than its brothers, employs several M3/M4 chassis components, including their electric power-steering systems. As an illustration, the M2 draws its rear dampers from the heaviest 3 Series Touring (global wagon) model to ensure the rear tires stay pressed to the pavement. The front springs are slightly stiffer while the rear springs are softer. Speaking of tires, the 275/35R19 front and 285/30R20 rear Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires on 9.5 x 19 and 10.5 x 20-inch wheels that come standard on the M2 cost $1,300 more than the equivalent tires on the M3 and M4.
More excellent news: BMW will offer eight-speed automatic and six-speed manual gearboxes, with the former arriving primarily in our market. (It’s possible that a limited allocation of manual automobiles will end up going to another market.) We excitedly jumped into the three-pedal variant outfitted with the usual sport seats after being provided hot laps in each.
BMW ceased producing the M2?
For the 2022 model year, BMW will introduce a new generation of the 2-Series coupe, which will continue to be rear-wheel-drive only. This means that even after its own redesign, our favorite 2-Series model, the M2, won’t lose its hard-core edge.
The most revealing spy images and video we’ve yet obtained depict a new M2 prototype testing at the Nurburgring.
The most recent prototype features all the distinguishing features of a BMW M, including flared wheel arches, side mirrors with aerodynamic shapes, and quad exhaust tips.
The M2 will retain the length and width of the new 2-Series, which are larger than those of the vehicle it succeeds. Although the weight can be a problem, this should increase stability. We also know that the body’s torsional stiffness will increase with the new generation.
A detuned version of the 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-6 seen in the most recent M3 and M4, as well as the X3 M and X4 M, is anticipated to provide the engine’s power. The new M2 should have roughly 400 horsepower, a significant increase from the 365 horsepower of the previous M2. At launch, a hotter M2 Competition ought to be accessible as well.
Both an 8-speed automatic and 6-speed manual transmission should be available. Although all-wheel drive might be made available in the Competition standard, as is the case for the M3 and M4, rear-wheel drive is a guarantee.
The redesigned M2 will likely make its debut as a 2023 model later in 2022. The manufacturing will take place at the BMW factory in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. It is the location of the standard 2-Series coupe’s manufacturing.
Additionally, there have been reports that the front-wheel-drive 1-Series hatchback and 2-Series Gran Coupe, which are sold internationally, may have their own specific M models. These are said to have a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine and all-wheel drive, with peak outputs of roughly 400 horsepower. Marcus Flasch, the former head of BMW M, claimed that the absence of a suitable engine prevented the development of such vehicles. The situation might change given the popularity of competing models like Mercedes-Benz AMG and Audi Sport, especially now that former Audi Sport chief Frank van Meel is in control of BMW M.
Will there be a BMW M2 in 2023?
The S58 engine, which is specifically improved by the BMW M division starting with the B58 unit, is paired with the exhaust. Two output stages of the straight-six petrol engine are available. 450 horsepower is predicted for the 2023 BMW M2. We anticipate a 406 lb-ft of torque, which is about the same as the basic BMW M4. There are two different gearbox options: a six-speed manual and an eight-speed automatic. There is no M xDrive system and only the rear wheels receive power.
The cooling system, not excessively, originates from the M3/M4 as well as being a standard feature in the upcoming 2023 BMW M2, just like it was on the F87 M2 CS.
The G87 M2 has a wheelbase that is 4.3 inches (110 mm) shorter than the M4’s, although both the front and rear tracks are the same width. but much wider than the standard 2 Series, measuring about 2.2 inches (54 mm). BMW employed the same wheels and tires as the M4: 20 inches in the back and 19 inches up front, both with 285 mm/30 tires. The M2 does not come with an additional wheel choice, but you may buy it with Michelin Sport Cup 2 tires instead.
The 2023 BMW M2’s interior maintains the driver-focused design while adding the huge curved display from other future BMW vehicles. The seats, both the basic M Sport seats and the optional carbon bucket seats, are likewise imported from the M3/M4.
The next BMW M2 will go on sale in April 2023, although the production series G87 M2 won’t be unveiled until mid-October 2022.
