A set of all-season tires will typically last between 25,000 and 30,00 miles. Less if your tires are under- or over-inflated, or if your alignment is wrong. (It amazes me how many people rely solely on the TPMS system and don’t own a tire gauge.)

If you have summer performance tires, which have a softer compound, hit off-ramps recklessly, and/or live in an area with abrasive pavement, like Florida, you will get even less miles.

If this is a major concern for you, I would respectfully advise against driving a BMW because you might be pushing your financial limits too far.

Questions and Answers

When should I get new tires for my BMW?

Even though there is still plenty of tread on the tires, it is advised to change them every four to five years. This happens because the rubber in your tires hardens and loses some of its ability to grip the pavement.

Additionally, if you drive a lot of miles each year, you should change the tires more frequently. Be sure to replace the tires before they reach the required 2/32-inch tread depth for safe wet driving. To keep track of the tread depth on your tires, use the built-in tread wear indicators (TWIs).

What is the BMW 328i’s recommended tire pressure?

The size of your wheels will determine this. The recommended pressure is 32 psi on both ends for the majority of models and trims. However, vehicles with equal front and rear diameters should have 32 psi (front) and 35 psi (rear) of pressure. If you want to be certain, look in the owner’s manual or on the driver’s side door sill.

When I replace the tires, do I also need new TPMS sensors?

When you replace the tires, you can reuse the current TPMS sensors; the tire technician should take care of this for you. However, you must move the sensors to the new wheel and tire assembly if you change your rims.

Bridgestone RE050 II RFT tires were installed on my 2011 328i Wagon (Sport Package, staggered 17-inch wheels). I should have changed them at 25K miles because they lasted exactly 30K. changed to non-runflat tires I got 42k miles from these and probably retired them a few thousand miles early. enhanced the journey greatly.

Conti DWs were the next set. Even better, and especially quieter than the two earlier tires. They have 26k miles on them and still have lots of tread. The rears are a touch worse and the fronts appear to be less than half done.

Runflat tires are much heavier than non-runflat tires, and your gas mileage may improve. The emergency flat issue is the only drawback for me. Going without runflats doesn’t seem like a big concern because the roads here in Florida are rather smooth and we don’t carry winter survival packs.

My car has 48,200 miles on it, and as far as I know, it still has the original Bridgestone Turanza EL42 RFT tires, which are still in terrific condition.
