Just like its German counterparts at Audi and Mercedes-Benz, BMW limits the top speed of its production automobiles to 155 mph (250 km/h). Even its performance-oriented models share this trait, but this does not preclude the possibility that the cars could travel farther or faster if their electronic speed limits were disabled.
A video of a 2020 BMW M850i xDrive Coupe doing just that was uploaded by a German YouTube channel that specializes in documenting various vehicles accelerating to their top speed on the Autobahn. The German variant, which you can see in the video below, has no issue consistently hitting its rated top speed. If its electronic limiter weren’t there, it could go even faster.
Naturally, tuning businesses provide these services, and the M Driver Package is an option for some BMW M vehicles. The latter increases the electronic speed limits to 280 km/h, however it is often only available for automobiles produced by the M division. However, for BMW non-M vehicles that are capable of handling that task, tuners can take care of that aspect.
The 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine in the G15 BMW M850i Coupe produces 530 horsepower at 5,500 RPM. It has 750 Nm of torque, which is available between 1,800 and 4,600 RPMs, or 553 lb.-ft. of torque. Both the xDrive all-wheel-drive technology and the eight-speed automatic transmission are included as standard equipment.
For a car that weighs 4,478 pounds, the German coupe can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in under 3.7 seconds, which is an impressive performance (2,031 kg). The BMW V8 engine was tuned at AC Schnitzer to produce 611 horsepower using fully homologated components. Sadly, the tuning firm has not provided information regarding the increased peak speed of the final vehicle.
For the BMW M850i, there is a G-Power tuning kit that may increase power to 670 hp and decrease the 0–100 km/h (62–mph) time to just 3.1 seconds. 320 km/h (198 mph) is the top speed that the M850i model can achieve after its limiter is disabled.

Compared to the twin-turbo V-8’s 523 horsepower counterpart in the M5, this engine has a little power loss. The M850i’s standard xDrive all-wheel drive makes it simple to accelerate from a complete stop to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds. If not restricted to a high speed of 155 mph, it could easily reach 190 mph. Acceleration is fairly drama-free with hardly a ping from the tires thanks to the all-wheel-drive grip.
The 245/35-20 front tires and 275/30-20 rear tires may appear a little small for this car, but they offer an incredible amount of traction, and unless you are driving like a crazy, you will nearly never reach the limit on the street.
VIDEO: AutoTopNL’s BMW M850i xDrive Acceleration and Top Speed
The BMW 8 Series is one of our favorites. Even though it has been known about for some time and isn’t particularly novel at this point, we still adore it, especially the BMW M850i. It’s lovely, cozy, opulent, and enjoyable to drive. It is also quick. very quickly It’s not the top-dog 8 Series (that would be the future BMW M8), but this new AutoTopNL video shows that it’s not lacking in performance either.
How swiftly does the BMW M850i go? Using an Ignition GPS performance tracker, we can see its acceleration time and top speed in this video. They may test its 0-100 km/h (62 mph), 100-200 km/h (62-124 mph), quarter-mile time, and 0-200 km/h using that GPS tracker. It moves rather quickly through all of those moments.
It achieved a speed of 100 km/h in 3.66 seconds. It is almost as quick as a Ferrari 458 Italia even though it is much more affordable, luxurious, useable, and practical every day. Let’s round that to 3.7 seconds. And it won’t burn down every other week either. For a non-M BMW that weighs as much as the 8er does, it completed the quarter-mile in 11.58 seconds, which is incredibly fast. The BMW M850i accelerates from 0 to 200 km/h in 12.36 seconds and from 100 to 200 km/h in 8.7 seconds.
Like most BMWs, it is also electronically limited to 155 mph, but on the Autobahn, it reaches 161 mph. But you just have a feeling that if it weren’t constrained, it could accomplish much more. With the speed limits removed, the BMW M850i may be seen approaching 190 mph. To reach the maximum 200 mph, though, the BMW M8 might need to be at its strongest.
We’re not really sure the M8 is necessary for people who don’t require the full-beans M Division treatment at that speed. The handling capabilities of the BMW M850i are also not lacking. Even though it’s more of a GT vehicle than a true sports vehicle, the M850i is more than capable of enthusiastically handling itself through some tricky sections unless you truly intend to hoon the vehicle through turns. It’s also comfortable.
After all, the spec sheets were lying, but in a nice manner.
BMW brought back the 8 Series in the middle of 2018 in an effort to restore all the glory to the lean yet powerful Bavarian coupe. Since the German automaker introduced the second-generation model more than six months ago, the M850i xDrive in particular, has yet to demonstrate the boastful statistics on paper with real-world performance.
Well, that’s over now. Recently, AutoTopNL published its own acceleration test of the M850i xDrive, complete with a GPS gadget and an app that tracks the vehicle’s acceleration. With a top speed of 155 miles per hour (250 kilometers per hour) and a 0-62 mph (100 kph) rating of 3.7 seconds, we can be confident that the run will be strong.
However, it appears that the M850i xDrive’s initial spec sheet is inaccurate, which is a good thing. The all-wheel-drive coupe performed a 0-62 mph (100 kph) run in in 3.66 seconds, exceeding what BMW claimed for their acceleration test. In 12.36 seconds, the 0-124 mph (200 kph) run was completed.
Additionally, the M850i xDrive proved capable of exceeding its stated top speed of 155 mph (250 mph), clocking in at 161.5 mph (260 kph).
Vehicles That The BMW M850i Can Outrun to 62 mph
The M850i’s performance is arguably even more impressive than how the new BMW 8-series looks (look at the enormity of those kidney grilles!). Yes, the top-of-the-line 8er has 523 horsepower available from its 4.4-litre V8, so it doesn’t lack for power. But even so, you wouldn’t anticipate a huge car to be as speedy as this one is.
Although the exact weight hasn’t been determined, it won’t be light despite the extensive usage of aluminum and carbon fiber reinforced plastic in its construction. The ‘xDrive’ all-wheel drive system, however, allows it to accelerate outrageously quickly, from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.7 seconds. And to think, this isn’t even the 8er’s fastest iteration—an even quicker “M8” ought to appear at some time.
Here are some sports cars and supercars that the M850i may, according to factory figures, outperform in terms of acceleration to reach the benchmark speed. Isn’t progress a great thing?
How many horsepower is a BMW M850i equipped with?
We like the massive power of the M850i’s 523-hp twin-turbo V-8, which is available only with all-wheel drive. Even though the grander and more immersive drop-top version has an almost $10,000 extra, we really enjoy the type of drama it offers. The interior of the 8 is richly decorated, with leather adorning nearly every surface and beautiful embellishments that can be mixed and matched to suit individual tastes. The Cognac Merino leather and Aluminum Dark Trace inside trim are particular favorites. The glass controls for an even ritzier interior and the neck warmers in the headrests of the front seats, which will enable us to enjoy longer periods of top-down driving in our four-season state, are among the options we’d choose.
What BMW model is the fastest?
The BMW M5 Competition variant, which accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds, is now the company’s quickest production vehicle. Even some of the quickest cars under $100,000 are available from BMW, in a variety of styles ranging from coupes to SUV Sport Activity Vehicles(r).
How much does a BMW M440i cost?
All-wheel drive is standard on the M440i xDrive Gran Coupe (MSRP: $58,200), while it is available on the M440i coupe ($56,700) and M440i convertible ($64,200).
How quickly is an M8?
Performance stats include a limited peak speed of 250 km/h, a 0-100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration time of 3.2 seconds, and a 0-200 km/h (124 mph) acceleration time of 10.8 seconds (10.6 seconds for the M8 Competition) (155 mph). With the optional M Driver’s package, which also equips the vehicle with high speed rated tires, the top speed can be increased to 305 km/h (190 mph).
Which motor powers the M850i?
BMW has announced the launch of the G15 8-Series, which comes 19 years after the E31 8-Series was discontinued. The 2019 BMW M850i is the first vehicle to be sold in the US, however several other models, including an M8, are in the works.
Only 2-door coupes, the 840i and 850i were available in the E31 8-Series lineup. The 840i/Ci had 4.0L and 4.4L V8 engines, while the 850i versions were the top dogs thanks to their 5.0L and 5.4L V12 engines, respectively. BMW ceased sales of the 8-series in North America in 1997 after investing about $9 billion in 2019 dollars and selling only about 7,500 of them.
The 840i and 850i variants of the G15 8-Series will both be offered, but sadly, BMW no longer offers any V12 vehicles. The N63 engine from BMW, a 4.4L twin-turbocharged V8 also found in several previous 50i vehicles from 2008 to the present, will power the M850i.
The 2020 M8 is most likely to use the S63 engine, which is also used in the F10 M5 and F06 M6.
A BMW 850 is it a supercar?
BMW worked on the 8 Series for a while, trying to perfect its super-coupe. The 850CSi was built in 1993 with a second 12-cylinder engine variant. The 5.6-liter engine’s 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque allowed it to reach 60 mph in less than 6.0 seconds. At this point, BMW adopted active rear axle kinematics, in which the back wheels turn in the same direction in response to steering angle and speed.
What is the price of a BMW X8?
The 2022 BMW X8 will cost an average of $166,000, with the X8 M model coming in close to the $200,000 mark. The freshly announced 2022 BMW X8’s deserving successor, the 2023 BMW X8, is already garnering media attention. The model for the next year is scheduled to debut toward the end of 2022, with a final touchdown in 2023. It will compete against a number of high-end vehicles, including the Mercedes-Maybach GLS, the Land Rover Range Rover SV, and the Rolls-Royce Cullinan.
