A pair of 100 mm tailpipes with electrically adjustable flaps on a dual-branch exhaust system made particularly for the BMW X5 M and X6 M provide a seductive sound. The M Sound Control button on the center console can be used to attenuate or intensify the exhaust note. A standard M Sport Exhaust system gives the Competition versions’ sound even more of a sporty tone to go along with their greater capabilities.

The M Sound Control function modifies the exhaust gas system’s acoustic properties. The exhaust gas system makes a sporty sound when the sound control is on. The sound is comfort-oriented when sound control is off. Sound control has no impact on the sound of the exhaust gas system while the engine is warming up.

I’m curious as to how the idiots at BMW came to the decision that the X5 M50i’s exhaust would have crackles and pops but not the complete X5M.
