Prior to 2010, older BMW vehicles would ship with DVD maps that required to be replaced with more recent versions, of course for a price from an authorized dealer. The maps for the later models were kept in the internal memory of the iDrive, which could be updated by going to a BMW dealership or, in the case of the newest models, by connecting the car to the internet and downloading it.
