Light transmittance values for vehicles with sun protection glass range from 18 to 42%, and shading values range from 58 to 82%.
This is applicable to all glazing on the vehicle’s B-pillar, including the glass sunroof when installed, rear-side windows, and rear screen. Each model’s specific light transmittance and shading characteristics are unique, as are the glass suppliers’ values.
Light transmittance for the front screen and side windows is 78 (+/- 2)%.
Does anyone know the percentage by which the GT’s “sun protection glass” is tinted? The dealer was lacking one. Is it truly so dark? From the photographs, it doesn’t seem that way at all.
In the US, that is the default tint. Darker options are not included on the US construction sheet, however they might be available in Europe. If the rear windows could have the same tint as the moonroof, that would be excellent.
According to my understanding, sun protection glass is the sole option available in Europe. I couldn’t discover the tint percentage. I hope it’s not too frivolous. I’m grateful. I’m eager to get my first BMW.

For US owners, that is the area of confusion. There are no other alternatives; the only available tint is a light green tint that is roughly 70% as standard. If that is your current base offering, it makes sense that the “sun protection” will be darker. However, if your typical glass is clear, “sun protection” may be what we receive as standard here. You must actually see it to be able to be certain.
I looked at the configurator, and here is how it appears both ways:
In contrast to the US configurator, we do not have a choice for darker rear windows. The rear windows in that image are, in my estimation, between 20% and 35%.
Yes, the regular windows have a tint that allows 70% of light to pass through but just 30% of the light to pass through the darker back glass. It significantly affects the warmth in the back. My little one is disappointed because no one can see her wave at people anymore.
I may just tell the children to wear sunglasses because I am still not sure it is worth the effort.
It is on my back window, where I placed it for summer heat rejection. That need might not exist where you are. With the remains, I completed the rear quarter windows but skipped the side windows.
