Need a list of common tools/sizes for a BMW
I’m looking at purchasing some equipment to work on my e36, simply for basic tasks like braking, suspension, oil change, bushing replacement, etc. What are the typical sizes and tools for BMW? For example, I only need Metric sizes in my very basic tool set, therefore I’m going to get rid of the SAE sizes to create way for whatever I truly need for a BMW.
However, if you can, please feel free to fill in the blanks. Please help me finish this list! Please just mention the basic tools; do not list the unique BMW tools.
Thanks for your assistance! What is a 3/8″ torque wrench typically used for, I wonder? For wheel nuts and other things, 3/8″ is very little, right? Alternatively, can I simply buy the 1/2″ and use a 3/8″ converter?
Do you guys believe I should buy Snap-On tools with my money? Although I sort of agree with my auto technician teacher who always advises us to get the best tools we can afford, it is obviously too expensive to buy them all, so I’m considering only purchasing something I’ll use frequently, such as a ratchet. What do you think, guys?
It would be time for me to improve or add to my toolkit if I found myself doing wheel bearings. The 3/8″ rachet is the often used one. Since a 1/2″ is too large and challenging to deal with, it is a good idea to get sockets that fit the 1/2″. Due to strength, it is not recommended to utilize 3/8″ sockets on a 1/2″ rachet unless absolutely necessary. I would advise you to purchase a Craftsman kit because it includes superior tools (albeit not quite as good as Snap On and the like), plus you also receive a lifetime warranty.
For bigger fasteners, like lug nuts, I use a 3/8″ torque wrench with a 1/2″ adapter. A 1/2″ torque wrench, in my opinion, is too large for everyday use.
Because I feel the 6 point sockets grip the bolts better than the 12 point ones, I prefer using them. With a 10mm socket, you can perform a lot of work on BMW vehicles. I have drives for them in 1/4″, 3/8″, and 1/2″.
On my car, the differential nuts are accessed with a 14mm short hex socket. They can be challenging to locate. Search online as there are many other options.
