It’s interesting to note that the BMW M3 and M4 were two of the vehicles that aided BMW M’s sales in 2021. How Did Mercedes-Benz AMG Start and Keep Changing?

AMG was founded by Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, who were passionate about both engineering and racing. Do you want to know the meaning of the acronym AMG? The letters A and M stand for “Aufrecht,” “Melcher,” and “GroBaspach,” which stands for “birthplace.” The driving force behind AMG has always been to provide vehicles with greater performance and power.

These two engineers started developing the racing engine for the 300 SE before Daimler-Benz put a stop to all motorsport development initiatives. When one of the two engineers’ coworkers started the 300 SE’s engine in the German Touring Car Championship in 1965 and went on to win ten times, these extracurricular efforts were fruitful. It didn’t take long for Aufrecht and Melcher to establish themselves as authorities in enhancing and maintaining Mercedes-Benz vehicle performance.

The Performance Game Can Be Played in Two Different Ways

With more than 60 years of racing experience, BMW has experienced numerous victories. Over a century ago, Mercedes was the first to enter the winner’s circle. Because of this, many people believe that these two German powerhouses have been producing specialised performance vehicles for about as long. Not so.

BMW established BMW Motorsport as a separate business in 1972 to manage its performance-car and racing operations. This Munich-based division was rebranded BMW M in 1993 because road cars had grown to be such a significant component of its business. The three operating divisions of BMW M today are Automobiles (the production arm), Individual (which builds cars to order), and Driver Training (operating schools around the world). The name BMW Motorsport was revived in 1996 to identify the independent business with headquarters in England that manages all BMW motorsport activities.

The 1978 5-Series sedan, which featured an optional 3.2L/197-hp I-6 engine derived from the 633CSi, is where the M brand first appeared. Despite not sporting the M logo, desire was so high that BMW released the M535i in 1979. The 3.5L/218-hp I-6 typically seen in the 635CSi provided its power.

While the M535i was being developed, BMW unveiled the still stunning mid-engine M1 exotic, which is arguably the most well-known vehicle to bear the “M” brand. BMW hired German manufacturer Baur to create and assemble the 400 roadgoing automobiles required to homologate the M1 for global Group 5 competition, based on the Turbo concept car from 1972. Delivery of the road cars was delayed due to production issues, and by the time the 39 racing variants (some with 850-hp engines) were constructed, the M1 was no longer competitive. This year, there are five M models available, each with the M-signature high-performance engine and a manual transmission—no M is permitted to have an automatic transmission, at least not under the current regulations.

While Mercedes-AMG has lately been placed under the management of the massive corporation DaimlerChrysler, BMW Motorsport has always been a subsidiary of its parent company, BMW. DaimlerChrysler has owned a 51 percent stake in Mercedes-AMG since January 1999, and by the end of 2008, it will take over the remaining shares.

In 1967, Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher established the company in Grossaspach, Germany, which now employs 500 people and produces 12,000 cars annually. Building race cars and modified street cars based on Mercedes-Benz production versions, AMG had some success in the 1970s. But AMG didn’t start to become a major player in the performance car market until the business teamed up with Mercedes in 1988 to help Mercedes make a comeback in the German Touring Car Championship. The C36 AMG, which debuted in 1993, was the first officially co-developed production vehicle between the two businesses (1994 in the U.S. ). Mercedes-Benz has promised that each vehicle will eventually be available in an AMG variant.
