What It Does
The processors and keys of some automobiles can hold more data than those of others. More personal information is reportedly stored in the key fob of BMW vehicles than any other automaker.
Your car key is very much trackable to anyone nearby if it offers keyless entry and push-button starting capabilities. A signal that your key produces can be tracked, even hijacked, copied, and used to break into your car. Although it does not happen frequently, it does happen more frequently in our modern, technologically enabled environment.
Not simply the automobile keys are capable of storing data and being exposed. The internal computer, keys, locks, and immobilizer systems in current cars can all be hacked. Once the security is breached, a hacker has access to the vehicle and can then install viruses and tracking software, copy or decode keys, and even take your car. You may really use a very straightforward solution to stop key cloning and data scraping when it comes to your keys.
Can you track a missing key fob?
Despite being highly technological, key fobs don’t come with a built-in tracking feature just yet.
Fortunately, you have lots of third-party tools at your disposal to monitor your key fobs till then!
This is essentially a tiny keychain-sized fob that you can attach to your key fob (or your phone, wallet, vehicle keys, or anything else that has a propensity to disappear!)
These key trackers connect to your phone via Bluetooth; don’t worry, even the most affordable models typically have a range of several dozen meters.
Your key tracker might, depending on the manufacturer you select:
- Make a noise to aid in finding it
- GPS can be used to locate it.
- When you are a specific distance away, notify you.
Once everything is set up, all you’ll need to do to find your key fob is pull out your phone and use the app that is included — no more frantic searching or needing to go back a step or two!
Can someone hack my BMW key?
Your BMW’s remote key fob was created with security in mind as it is in charge of safeguarding your car. A clever mechanism ensures that your car won’t start unless it receives a specific signal from your key fob, and that signal is continuously changing. This virtually eliminates the possibility of a third party hacking your car or duplicating your key.
Most criminals won’t even attempt to hack your key or compromise the security system, in fact. The more frequent threat is a stranger coming close enough to your key fob, as by sitting at the table next to you. In this scenario, a signal amplifier might be used to transmit your key’s unique identification signal to a nearby accomplice, who could then use the signal to unlock your BMW.
Some people choose to keep their key fob in a signal-blocking pouch under these circumstances, which prevents a key fob power amplifier from detecting your fob. This feature is not present in the regular BMW key case, which is just intended to shield your key fob from damage.
However, you can employ the service of a key fob deactivation, which will block the key fob in the memory of the automobile to render it useless, if you lose a key and are concerned that it will end up in the wrong hands. Deactivating a key fob can be done by our specialists or the dealer.
If my BMW is stolen, can I find it?

Is it possible to locate a misplaced BMW key fob?

You will need to make arrangements for your automobile to be delivered to your preferred Center along with the necessary documentation if you have lost both keys and are unable to access the vehicle.
* A photocard driver’s license cannot be used for both address identification and personal identification.
To keep you safe, our Centers are required to adhere to these security precautions. Additionally, you’ll have to sign for your new key upon picking it up.

What does a BMW key’s diamond button do?
Does anyone have any knowledge of what the key fob’s diamond button is meant to do?
The included manual is incredibly succinct. It refers to a “Headlight courtesy delay feature,” although it’s not entirely clear what this feature performs. “If the standby state is switched on and the high-beam headlights are enabled, the low-beam headlights remain on for an of time,” the text states. Even if “… for a period of time” is meant to be “… for a length of time,” that still doesn’t adequately describe what this feature is.
According to the description, it can only be used when the automobile has just been turned off and the high beams are on. However, when the car is locked, the button appears to have some effect. The inside lights occasionally come on. The headlights occasionally come on. It is quite unpredictable and challenging to duplicate.
What experiences do others have? Has anyone figured out what this button’s actual purpose is?
It is unfortunate that it cannot be set to perform things like open the windows or sunroof, switch on the heating, or other things!
Mine has two options (330e in Belgium): turn on the lights in the house or turn on the air conditioning. In the options for the car, I can select the default function.
It briefly illuminates the headlights in my automobile. Excellent for illuminating the path to your front entrance or finding your car at night in a big parking lot.
Check the “Home lights” setting under “Exterior Light Settings” on your iDrive to make sure it is not set to 0 seconds.
My headlights now turn on for 10 seconds when I hold the diamond button on the key because I set mine to that duration.
Are trackers included with new BMWs?
BMW provides a telematic roadside assistance service under the name BMW Assist (also known as MINI Assist). As both GM’s OnStar and Mercedes-Benz mbrace employ the cellular network and Global Positioning telemetry to locate or steer the vehicle, BMW Assist is comparable to both services. Turn-by-turn directions, remote unlocking, car diagnostics, airbag deployment notification, theft recovery, towing or flat tire repair are among services that BMW Assist may offer. In the majority of brand-new BMWs, the servicing is free. It can be bought at a yearly price once it expires. BMW assist is now undergoing a “technical upgrade” in the US as of March 2016, and renewals for MY2013 and earlier vehicles are not being processed. BMW hasn’t given a completion date estimate. The benefits of the Safety or Convenience plans are no longer available to those whose memberships have expired. Members who have active service as of December 31, 2016, will be given the option of either a hardware retrofit to continue service or $200 in compensation for losing service. A certain demographic was excluded from safety and security measures since BMW did not permit renewal for them between March and December 2016.
