“I’ve driven my 650GS (single-cylinder Dakar version) roughly 30,000 kilometers, and yes, upkeep is pricey. Every time I take it to the mechanic, I wind up spending many hundreds of euros. The guys say I wouldn’t need to replace my chain and cogs if I took better care of them. Maybe they’re right. It’s pricey in either case.”

“When something fails, it fails and is extremely expensive. For instance, the engine of my friend’s K1300S required a complete replacement due to a malfunction. His R1200R had an ABS issue, and the repair will run roughly $1000. And he performs all of his job normally, but BMW has a lot of proprietary parts that are either impossible to find on the open market or are constructed in such a way that they cannot be repaired; they must be completely replaced. Additionally, I’ve never seen a manufacturer with that many recalls.”

BMW and Ducati motorcycles typically cost more to repair than Japanese motorcycles (I’m not sure about MV or Aprilia). Every 6,000 miles, BMW twins need to be serviced. I’ll soon be performing a 16K service on my 2013 R12R, which will also require tires (I get nearly 6K miles out of my tires/works well with these service intervals). I expect this service will cost me the same as or somewhat less than my 12K service, which was completed by SDBMW and cost $860.00.

As for upgrading your front OEM shock, “fo-get-about-it” and get a about $600 Wilber, Yacugar, or Hyperpro W/ Y/ H instead, which is far better (both F/ R are normally good for approximately 20K to 30K +/- miles)! The stock O.E.M rear shock is “quite” decent in my opinion (along with a select few others), but if I had to change it, I would choose a W/ Y/ H.

Anyway, “good” mechanics now earn between $80 and $100 per hour here in the United States. It may be pricey because of that and the price of the parts. The good news is that, if desired, BMW air cooled twins are simple to work on (there are numerous manuals and DVDs that teach step-by-step processes), which can save a lot of money.

Good luck, and when I take mine in for its 16K servicing, I’ll feel your misery.
