Is our factory-installed tow hook compatible with all other BMW models? There is only one choice I can find for a tow hook license plate mount, and that is the Bav auto kit. It seems a bit expensive for $70. Maybe they fit the e53 since I can get far less expensive ones that fit the e39, e36, etc.? I am unable to locate the tow hook’s part number to check the realoem.
Good luck! Using the VIN of your X5 to pull up the diagram or component number index will also show you if the tow hook has a TO/FROM date range. It’s possible that not every E53 uses the same tow hook. In order to know what to buy and where to look, it is best to browse around before making a purchase.
compatibility with B6 tow hooks
They are all, AFAIK, the same. even the majority cross platforms I believe an Audi will accommodate a BMW hook. I might be completely mistaken, but I believe they are all the same.
I’m trying to recall, but I believe there is a distinction. On VWs, I believe the threaded end is different. I believe I have a B5/B5.5 passat connection around here that I was going to attempt to weld a front plate holder to but realized it’s not the same. However, I bet that all Audi hooks of a similar generation are identical.
I also want to do the same thing here. Certainly seems preferable to spending $100 on a readymade one.
Could you try the VW hook if you have a chance and let me know how it goes? Thank you very much.
When we had to pull an Audi TT onto a trailer at the shop a few weeks ago, we had to go around and around. Long gone was the TT hook. We believed that a B6 hook would fit. Nope. Not even a B7. Thus, we donned our thinking caps and contemplated, “Considering that it is a transverse VW platform, perhaps we are heading in the wrong route. The Jetta MK5 should work with that then.” Nope. The Jetta MK4 — its platform-mate — will DEFINITELY have a hook that works, I suppose. No luck. That one caught me off guard. C5 A6 was the last hopeless attempt, and it worked! Even among VW/Audi items from 2000 and beyond, it appears that there are at least three different versions of these items. When we learned this, we were really shocked.
Wow! That actually came as a major shock. Regarding the plate holder, my friend created one using his E92 M3’s factory-original tow hook for a very low cost. He and I will be eating lunch together today, and if he drives, I’ll snap some photos of it for you.
Instead of his e92 M, he chose to drive his 190e Cosworth. I’ll tell him to bring the e92 to cars & coffee on Sunday though (must suck huh). so I can get a photo for you.

Work tow straps?
Tow straps are nevertheless helpful in recovery situations even though they aren’t officially recovery straps.
The amount of “give” that each strap has is what distinguishes a tow strap from a recovery strap. Tow straps are ideal for pulling automobiles because they have little to no elasticity. A tow strap should not be utilized to pull a trapped car out of whatever it is stuck in because of the lack of “give” in the tow strap.
Tow straps still have a purpose in recovery even though they shouldn’t be utilized for rough pulling. If all you have is a tow strap and you get stuck, you can still utilize it to try to escape. All you have to do is fasten the strap to a certified recovery point on each car, slowly remove the slack, and pull.
It’s crucial to keep in mind that tow straps have very little give, so you shouldn’t take off running. However, a tow strap’s stiffness and length make it an excellent tool for winching. The most popular length for tow straps is 20 feet, and they come in a variety of forms and sizes. This is excellent for adding length to your winch line.
It’s crucial to consider the pull rating of the strap while looking for a tow strap that will suit your demands. It is advised that your strap have a pull rating that is three times the weight of your car. Naturally, the strap is safer the greater the tow rating.
