Do hardtop convertibles still exist?

Only five of the items on our list are under $200,000, as the median base price has increased by 146 percent, while the average base price has increased by 38 percent. The BMW 4 Series, Mercedes SL, and Mercedes SLC roadster, each of which are being replaced by soft tops, are dropping off this year’s list. We gain two high-rollers and the Bronco (the Tesla Roadster and Ferrari SF90 Spider). Ford Bronco

Ford takes the top spot on our list of hardtop convertibles with the Bronco, a two-door vehicle that starts at around $30,000 and includes a three-piece hard top as standard. The four-door comes standard with a soft top; a five-piece hardtop costs $695 more. Given the amount of work and tools needed to completely remove the roof, which must then be stored safely, the Bronco and Jeep Wrangler both stretch the definition of “convertible.” In order to create a targa-style openness that can be enhanced by removing the doors, panels may be readily removed above both seating rows (in the Wrangler, only the front ones come off). Additionally, unlike Jeep, the side-view mirrors stay attached to the body.

Jeep Wrangler

Base Since soft tops are standard on all Jeep Wranglers, the prices shown above also include the $1,495 option fee for the base three-piece hardtop convertible option. The Sky 1-Touch power (soft) top section with detachable rear quarter windows is one of the additional top options. Similar to the Bronco, removing the basic hardtop’s rearmost section requires loosening eight bolts, cutting the washer-fluid and electrical connections, and pulling the roughly 100-pound top off the car to store it. But even if you never do that, the two Freedom Panels above the front seat can be readily stowed in protective bags in the back by unscrewing them like old-style T-tops (without leaving a T-bar, of course).

Jeep Gladiator

Similar to the Wranglers, all Gladiator trim levels come standard with a soft-top; a hard Freedom Top costs an additional $1,495. (which we include in the price above). The same criticisms that apply to removing the Wrangler top apply here as well, with the exception that the Gladiator top weighs less without the part that covers the cargo area. By providing secure, organized locations for the electrical connectors to be stored when the top is off, by including the tool needed to remove the bolts, and by including a secure location to store all bolts, Jeep has at least made significant efforts to make it easier to remove the top (and doors, and windshield) from the Wrangler and Gladiator.

Chevrolet Corvette

The targa roof panel on the base Corvettes can be removed and stored in the rear trunk, but the completely convertible version has the first fully automatic one-button retractable hardtop for the car. It takes up no space in the trunk because it fits perfectly over the small 6.2-liter LT2 V-8. Here, the top separates into two panels before being stored beneath a large tonneau panel with “speedster” hump/flying buttresses that maintain the coupe’s fast-back coupe shape. The rear window is a vertical pane that may be lowered independently of the top in this instance. At speeds under 30 mph, the hardtop convertible on the roadster may be raised or lowered in 16 seconds. C8 Corvettes offer more combined luggage volume than any other mid-engine performance car thanks to their spacious frunk and trunk.

Tesla Roadster

Although relatively few concrete details are known, we anticipate that the second-generation Tesla Roadster would have 2+2 seating and a detachable glass targa panel (remember, the brand was founded by electrifying Lotus Elise roadsters). One front and two rear motors (for torque vectoring) will be part of its three-motor Plaid powertrain, which will have a combined output of 800 to 1,000 hp. With a stated top speed of over 200 mph, that is supposed to be capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 1.9 seconds (made possible by at least an additional gear ratio in the driveline). Similar to the C8 Corvette and Ferrari F8, this vehicle has two roof panels, a sturdy tonneau with flying buttresses, a vertical rear window that powers down, and other similar features. They end up stowing headliner-to-headliner because McLaren pivots the rearmost one while translating the front. At speeds up to 25 mph, the hardtop may be raised or lowered in around 15 seconds. The 3.8-liter twin-turbo M838TE V-8 in the 600LT generates 592 horsepower and 457 lb-ft of torque.

McLaren 720S Spider

Having trouble with the Sport Series from McLaren? Then go on to the McLaren M840T 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 Super Sport series 720S Spider, which improves the engine to make 710 horsepower and 568 lb-ft of torque. If you can find a place to stretch its legs, you can reach 60 mph in 2.5 seconds and reach 212 mph with the top up or 202 mph with it down. Compared to the Sport Series automobiles, it has a simpler top with only one roof panel that slides under the tonneau cover and stows, painted side up. A glass roof panel with electrochromic tinting is available for $9,100.

Ferrari F8 Spider

The mid-engine rival to the McLaren 720S Spider is Ferrari’s F8 Spider. The 3.9-liter 711-hp/568-lb twin-turbo V-8 that powers the F8 accelerates the vehicle to 60 mph in under 2.9 seconds. Ferrari 812

The front-engine 812, which is offered in two variants this year, combines the long-hood, short-deck elegance of the Portofino M with the accelerative energy of a high-revving naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V-12. The 812 GTS has a fully automatic, one-button retractable roof and 789 horsepower and 530 lb-ft of torque. The new, limited-edition 812 Competizione A (for aperto, or open) has 830 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque at 9,500 rpm (the highest ever for a Ferrari road car). Ferrari SF90 Spider

The fastest and most potent open-top Ferrari since a grand prix racer is Ferrari’s new top-of-the-line SF90 Spider. The plug-in hybrid hypercar has a 7.9 kWh high-voltage battery powering a 769 hp/590 lb-ft twin-turbo V-8, two 97 hp/62 lb-ft front motors, and a 157 hp/196 lb-ft rear motor. 986 horsepower are produced collectively.
