You might believe that nothing can be done if you don’t have a lucky A3 that comes with paddle shifters from the factory. The good news is that your automobile can be retrofitted with a steering wheel that has paddle shifters for a reasonable price. Here is the procedure.
Are there paddle shifters in the Audi A6?
Despite being made of plastic, paddle shifters add to the sporty atmosphere. Audi’s all-wheel drive system, Quattro, gives the chassis as much traction as it can handle, resulting in a strong 0.90g skid pad performance. Although you may anticipate Quattro to make the A6 seem heavier to handle, it doesn’t.

I’ll admit, I’ve never been a particularly good paddler. I’m ashamed to say that I can’t swim because I fell into the deep end of a pool when I was younger. Additionally, I feel uneasy in boats like rowing boats because of my inherent mistrust of the water.
But I’m happy to announce that, thanks to our new long-term Audi TT, my paddling has suddenly gotten considerably better. And what’s this? Not even getting wet is necessary. Instead, the TT’s paddleshift gearbox is all about injecting a dash of adrenaline into regular driving.
The S tronic transmission from Audi can be used in clutchless shifting mode, fully automatic mode, or both. The paddle shifters are located on the back of the multi-function steering wheel.
I’ve changed the way I drive to use both because there are moments when it can be challenging to find the paddles, which are linked to the wheel rather than the steering column.
And what a difference the system makes in the TT’s dynamism. The supercoup feels more like a super heavyweight when it is in automatic mode since it continuously wants to shift up to sixth gear, which makes it slow, plodding, and unresponsive. The Audi comes alive when you shift to manual mode, enabling you to fully utilize the magnificent 3.2-liter V6 engine. Although there is always a tiny delay as the TT changes, acceleration is quick and gradual. And that latency is the biggest complaint about a machine that is exquisitely designed, developed, and assembled.
Even though more modern TTs are now hitting the roads, the clean lines outside still draw admiring glances. The interior’s grey leather trim is holding up considerably better than I anticipated, and despite having driven almost 10,000 miles, the entire vehicle still feels taut and sharp.
I am aware that my road test coworkers think that the BMW 3-Series coupe still outperforms the TT dynamically. However, the essential issue is what you hope to gain from your coup. You can’t ask for more than that since every time I drive the Audi, it’s a great occasion in my eyes.
Do the paddle shifters on the Audi A7 work?
The swoopy Audi A7 is a sexy hatchback with performance and attitude to match. There are premium vehicles with better performance or roomier backseats, and there are luxury SUVs with more usefulness.
The BMW 535 Gran Turismo, a luxury hatchback that unquestionably loses the comparison in terms of aesthetics, is priced nearly identically to the A7, which is based on the next-generation A6 sedan.
Although the engines in the hatchbacks have comparable power, they drive very differently. Additionally, they differ on the inside: the BMW is a more opulent cruiser, whilst the A7 strives to be a sport sedan.
Looks Audi turned their R8 supercar into a movie star by featuring it prominently in the well-known “Iron Man movie series.” The A7 definitely imitates the car’s aggressive front end, but that’s the extent of the hatchback’s similarity to modern Audi models.
The car’s end is truncated, as if the end of a loaf of French bread were chopped off with a knife. The back end has a slanted rear window, as you might imagine. A lip spoiler is created by an upward curve, and a retractable spoiler is concealed in a small spot on the deck lid.
You might just state that the A7 is beautiful and stop talking about design details. My neighbors, coworkers, and one nice lady filling up her BMW next to me at a gas station all obviously envied me during my few days driving our Garnett Red test car.
Interior Inside the sumptuous Audi A8 premium automobile, suede lines the doors and plush leather seats. With a starting price $20,000 cheaper than the A8, the A7 is a very different vehicle despite the single-digit difference in its nomenclature. The inside is styled after sport coupes, and the dashboard is black with metal accents.
Our tester’s trim was made of dark ash wood and black leather, which did not work well together. There is a dark walnut trim option; perhaps it would look better with the beige or dark brown leather upholstery. To emphasize its sports-car character, I’d really prefer a carbon fiber or metallic finish with the black.
Finding the ideal driving posture was simple and the driver’s seat was cozy. There wasn’t as much room in the back seat.
The A7 is based on the midsize A6, and there was barely enough room for my 5-foot-10 frame with the driver’s seat adjusted for me. In contrast to the BMW 535 GT, which is based on the bigger 7 Series and has a roomy backseat. There is only 37 inches of legroom in the back, compared to 41.8 inches in the BMW. Only 35 inches are available in the more expensive Mercedes-Benz CLS 550.
There is a bubble cut out of the roof line for the heads of the back passengers because the sunroof significantly reduces headroom as well.
That also implies that the moonroof isn’t very large. Personally, I think the glass roof Audi has on its A5 coupe, which increases headroom and brightens the inside, is preferable. Even when it is open, the moonroof as-is doesn’t provide much light or give off an airy atmosphere.
Although they won’t be completely squished, your back passengers won’t be able to fully unwind. This is still a driver’s vehicle in the end.
Performance The 310-horsepower, supercharged V-6 engine paired with an eight-speed automated transmission is the only powertrain offered for the A7. Shift paddles are an optional addition to the steering wheel for manual gear changes.
It has a lively, high-revving engine that feels more powerful than it actually is. This is due to the vehicle’s comparatively low weight; it is almost 500 pounds lighter than a BMW 535 GT, which has a turbocharged six-cylinder engine with 300 horsepower.
Beautiful 20-inch wheels, a three-spoke steering wheel with shift paddles, and a sport suspension were included in our tester’s $1,500 option package.
The shift knob can be used to manually shift the automobile by flinging it to the right, where it will stay until you flip it back over, and then sliding it up or down in the gate to change gears. If you have the Sport Package, you may achieve the same result by quickly tapping the shift paddles on the steering wheel.
For the automated sport mode, I liked to lower the shifter from Drive into S. It’s not a standalone gate; if you push it once, it switches back to the D position and displays the S designation in the gauge cluster. This mode allows you to shift using the paddles and sharpens the response of the accelerator, but it reverts to the standard Drive setting if you miss a shift too many times. But whether you manually shift or not, the accelerator pedal still responds more quickly. With a short push back down, you can return it to the Drive mode. While in Drive alone, you can also manually shift, but Sport mode’s features are not available.
It was obvious that the car was not a cruiser like the BMW despite the stiffer suspension not being unduly firm.
The A7 may be at its finest when it comes to the speed-sensitive steering for which Audi is so widely knownoften not in a good manner. When driving slowly, Audi often tries for a very loose wheel, so if you’re navigating a parking garage, you have to turn the wheel around as if it were hooked to an arcade game from the 1980s. Although it’s a little firmer in the A7, the minor improvement becomes noticeable at around-town speeds and performs best under the most challenging conditions.
The current 5 and 7 Series are substantially lighter at low speeds than previous BMW models, whose steering is often so strong that it makes your arms work out at all speeds. However, they are a long way from the relaxed Audi wheel.
Another way the A7 differs from the BMW is in how it brakes: it brakes solidly and linearly. For greater efficiency, new BMWs now feature regenerative braking systems, much like those in hybrids. The A7 is virtually as effective as the BMW 535 GT with all-wheel drive, but they both fall short when it comes to pure brake sensation. Compared to the BMW, which gets 19/27 mpg city/highway, the A7 gets 18/28 mpg. Both call for premium fuel.
Features For the A7 Premium’s starting price of $59,250, you receive a decent amount of features. (Audi does refer to all of its base trims as “Premium.) The A7 Premium has leather, keyless entry, and the recognizable LED daytime running lights as standard features.
For $62,870, you can upgrade to the Premium Plus model, which includes 19-inch wheels, GPS, and parking sensors.
The Prestige model follows, with a starting price of $65,580 and features including a motorized tilt/telescoping steering wheel, xenon headlights, four-zone climate control, and a Bose sound system. The Prestige model’s exclusive option, the superb Bang & Olufsen sound system, costs an extra $5,900.
I liked the variety of amenities in our test car, especially the new navigation system from Audi. The A7 Premium Plus I drove lacked keyless entry but felt almost reasonable at $66,000 as-tested. All A7spossibly all Audisshould come standard with keyless entry and start. For half the price of the Prestige variant, the only A7 with it, many Nissans, Fords, and even Kias come with that feature.
The navigation system, which makes use of satellite imagery from Google, is really stunning. A wireless internet solution that leverages 3G signals to establish up to eight Wi-Fi access points is also available for the A7. In my testing, I discovered that it was just as snappy as my 3G iPhone, which was quicker when utilizing its own connection than the Audi’s.
However, the 3G technology may also transmit news, weather, and navigational landmarks. This is as opposed to utilising satellite transmissions, as rivals of SiriusXM Satellite Radio do. In addition to creating wireless hotspots, which don’t seem like much of an advantage, the A7 has satellite radio as well, so I’m not sure what the advantage is there. The navigation system is still one of the better ones I’ve tested when it comes to the fundamentals of getting you where you want to go, so I would still suggest customers to purchase one.

Cargo How does the new A7’s shapely… shape affect its usefulness? Not a lot. The 24.5 cubic feet of storage space in the back is deep and ideal for carrying golf clubs.
However, with the back seats in position and the curved glass in place, it is almost impossible to keep dogs restrained in the cargo area. I had to euthanize them so I could take my 65-pound boxer for a checkup at the vet. She had a fairly flat surface thanks to the seats, but I could tell she liked the larger rear seats of our station wagon.
Safety The A7 includes a basic set of airbags in addition to a number of the optional safety features that have become increasingly common in the premium market. Additionally, night vision assistancea function we’ve found little need for when not driving deer-patrolled rural roads in the dead of nightand adaptive cruise control with a collision-warning system are both available.
Audi calls their blind spot warning system “side assist,” and it cost $500. There are three LEDs contained in a black plate inside the exterior of the mirror, as opposed to lighting on the interior of the automobile or in the mirrors themselves.
It’s an odd choice, and it doesn’t seem that appealing either. The system’s lack of accuracy was the main issue, though. They flashed a few times after a car had passed me or when there was plenty of room for me to merge. These systems are now standard, even on normal midsize sedans, and in most cases, I’ve seen them perform better.
The Audi A7 is available. The A7 is not really necessary for Audi’s portfolio. Customers might save money without sacrificing much functionality by purchasing an A6 car with the same engine. They may alternatively choose for a Q5 or Q7 SUV, which would give them more utility at the expense of performance. Having all that, the A7 does combine driving enjoyment and useful luxury, and it does so in a stunning package.
