Where Is 2017 Audi Q5 Made

Oct. 8, 2016, 12 p.m. ET

Audi is shifting the Q5’s manufacturing from Ingolstadt to a brand-new facility in Mexico, the company’s first auto plant in North America. A total of 4,200 jobs will be added by year’s end to support the San Jos Chiapa factory’s yearly production capability of up to 150,000 units. Currently, more than 3,300 jobs have been created.

The new Audi plant in Mexico, which was constructed over three and a half years, is 988 acres (400 hectares) in size and has the assembly line, press, paint, and body shops, among other necessities. According to Audi CEO Rupert Stadler, it was all made possible by a significant investment of more than 1 billion (about $1.1B) to reach a new milestone in the history of the firm.

The 2017 Q5, which was unveiled in Paris earlier this month, is currently being put together in the new facility and is slated to go on sale at the start of 2019. The crossover, which is somewhat bigger than before, is up to 198 pounds (90 kilograms) lighter than its forerunner and is built on the same MLB Evo architecture as the A4 and A5 vehicles from which it will inherit the engine and gearbox lineups.

The optional adaptive air suspension, which was adapted from the one offered in the second-generation Q7, is a first for the Q5. All of the other engines will be connected to Audi’s AWD system as standard, with the exception of the 150-hp 2.0 TDI diesel, for which the Quattro arrangement is an option.

Customers will be able to choose from 14 exterior colors, several S Line packages, LED or matrix LED headlights (with sweeping turn signals), a Bang & Olufsen sound system, a 12.3-inch completely digital instrument cluster, and many other options when ordering the new Q5.

The car will first be sold in European markets, and Audi has already confirmed that the base Q5 2.0 TDI 120 kW Quattro S tronic will cost 45,100 euros in Germany.

The Audi Q5 was produced where?

When Audi’s Puebla factory first opened its doors in September 2016, it was the automaker’s 12th facility. In a factory with 5,268 employees as of the end of 2019, the Q5, along with its popular SQ5 and electrified Q5 TFSIe versions, are made there. Production was halted early this year, as it was at the majority of auto manufacturers throughout the world that were impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

The Puebla factory will start producing Q5s on Monday, June 15. This is wonderful news. Though just 30% of the personnel is expected to return, Automotive Logistics has heard from an Audi representative that this would result in a reduction in production output. All employees will also be required to adhere to the strict sanitary standards set by the regional Ministry of Health. After more than two months of dormancy, production of the luxury crossover will gradually increase in the upcoming weeks.
