- This V-6 engine produces 443 lb-ft more torque than the V-8 while producing 444 hp fewer horsepower.
- By the end of 2019, the 2020 S6 will arrive in the United States after going on sale in Europe this summer.
UPDATE 7/26/19: Audi has disclosed the S6’s specifications and price in the US. The Premium Plus trim level and the Prestige trim level have starting prices of $74,895 and $78,795, respectively. Accordingly, this story has been amended.
The boosted version of the Audi A6 sedan now features a smaller engine. The new S6, which is based on the most recent C8 generation A6, uses the same twin-turbo 2.9-liter V-6 as the RS5, replacing the previous model’s twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8. The new engine has 444 horsepower, which is a tiny decrease from the previous engine, but torque is up 37 lb-ft to 443 lb-ft. This engine in the S6 has a 48-volt mild hybrid system and an electric supercharger, according to Audi, unlike the RS5.

The Audi S6 is swift.
From the time of its introduction in late 1994, the Audi S6 was powered by a 2,226 cc (135.8 cu in) turbocharged inline five-cylinder gasoline engine (parts code prefix: 034, identification code: AAN) with a BoschMotronic electronic engine control unit (ECU), generating 169 kW (230 PS; 227 bhp) at 5,900 rpm and 326 Nm (240 lbft) at roughly 1,950 The S6’s peak speed with this engine was 235 km/h (146.0 mph), and it took 6.7 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) and 17.5 seconds to reach 160 km/h (99.4 mph).
The Audi’s dynamic Torsen T-1 quattro permanent four-wheel drive system was optionally available with the vehicle’s standard six-speed manual transmission (five-speed only in North America) and four-plus-one-speed automatic transmission (the fifth “gear” is referred to as a “lockup” gear, which reduces the RPM by about 400 at highway speed with cruise control on).
In the first generation of European S4s, Audi offered a high-performance 4.2-liter V8 engine (parts code prefix: 077, identification code: AEC) with a Bosch Motronic ECU as an option. Audi decided to carry on with this practice with the S6, offering a 213 kW (290 PS; 286 bhp) version of the 4.2 as an upgrade over the 2.2-liter inline five-cylinder turbo. The V8-powered S6 retained quattro all-wheel drive but came standard with a four-plus-one-speed automatic transmission, unlike the five-cylinder turbocharged variant. Additionally offered as an option was a six-speed manual transmission.
Audi S6 dependability
Over 20 model years, one complaint has been lodged by S6 owners. It has a lot of gearbox issues and is ranked third in overall reliability out of 19 Audi models according to our PainRankTM system.
An Audi A6 is it a luxury vehicle?
A: The manufacturer describes the A6 as a “luxury sports sedan.” This makes sense given its svelte look and all 2021 models’ standard turbocharged engines.
The S6 has a dual turbo?
The 450-horsepower 4.0-liter V-8 that drove the S6 from the previous generation has been replaced by a more sophisticated powertrain in the 2020 model. The 48-volt hybrid system powers the electric supercharger on the regular 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-6 to provide more boost. The system generates a powerful 444 horsepower overall. Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive technology and an eight-speed automatic are included as standard. Audi claims the vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds, but we believe that estimate is modest given that the S7, the S6’s more sculpted rival, was able to do it at our test track in just 4.1 seconds. The S6 proves to be a delightful partner on winding roads. It hides its size and is more agile than we expected, especially when equipped with the rear-wheel steering system that is an option.
