The Audi Cup was won by Spurs there.

Tottenham Hotspur, an English football team, was named the 2019 Audi Cup champion late on Wednesday. Tottenham won the Audi Cup in Munich, Germany, after defeating the tournament’s host team, Bayern Munich, on penalties. At the Allianz Arena, the squad took a 1-0 lead at halftime thanks to a goal from Argentine winger Erik Lamela.

When did Spurs last take home a trophy?

With a 2-1 triumph over London rivals Chelsea, Juande Ramos led Tottenham to Carling Cup glory after a period of 14 years without a trophy.

One of Didier Drogba’s several goals in cup finals gave the Blues the lead, but Spurs fought back, drawing even with a Dimitar Berbatov penalty before a Jonathan Woodgate header sealed the victory in extra time.

To assess how they’ve done since, we’ve looked back at the Tottenham team from that particular day.

GK: Paul Robinson

The goalkeeper’s career high and the only trophy he won after winning the FA Youth Cup with Leeds in 1997. Following his gaffe for England against Croatia back in 2006, a strong performance at Wembley served as a welcome rebuttal amid mounting criticism.

Heurelho Gomes replaced him four months later, although he stayed in the top division for years to come, making over 100 Premier League games for Blackburn before staying on to play for them after being demoted in 2012.

RB: Alan Hutton

The former Scotland international’s Tottenham career reached its pinnacle in just his third match after joining from Rangers.

During his three and a half years at White Hart Lane, Hutton was merely a minor player. However, he then went on to play over 200 times for Aston Villa, where he eventually retired in the summer of 2019 after helping the team get promoted.

CB: Jonathan Woodgate

Woodgate, like Hutton, had a fantastic debut at White Hart Lane, scored the game-winning header in overtime just one month after joining from Newcastle.

The ensuing 200809 season saw the former center-half appear almost continuously, but he otherwise battled injuries throughout his career.

He finished his playing career at his home team Middlesbrough, where he later returned in a coaching capacity. He later accepted his first managerial position in the 201920 season before being fired in favor of Neil Warnock.

The most recent manager of Bournemouth was Woodgate, who won the position over candidates like Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry after having a successful tenure as caretaker manager.

CB: Ledley King

King, a one-club star, ended his injury-plagued playing career in 2012 and transitioned from Tottenham ambassador to first-team assistant coach in 2020.

If/when Conte loses his shit for the last time, don’t be surprised to see his name on a press release stating that First-Team Coach Ledley King will oversee management duties as a caretaker until the end of the season.

Tottenham, have you ever won a trophy?

Spurs have previously won trophies, but it has been a while. The club’s most recent prize was the League Cup (Carling Cup, afterwards known as the Carabao Cup), which it won in 2008 by defeating Chelsea 2-1 in the championship game following extra time.

In that game, goals from Jonathan Woodgate and Dimitar Berbatovthe latter coming four minutes into extra timesaw Spurs to victory. Jermaine Jenas and Robbie Keane were notable players for Spurs in that lineup, which also featured Ledley King as captain and England international Paul Robinson in goal. They defeated Chelsea players Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, and Petr Cech, all of whom began the match.

Spurs defeated Middlesbrough, Blackpool, and Manchester City all by 2-0 scores before to the championship game. Then, in the semifinals, they defeated rivals Arsenal from North London. Spurs tied 1-1 at the Emirates before the pivotal second leg, a 5-1 triumph that advanced them 6-2 on the overall score.

How many days have passed since Spurs’ victory?

2022-03-17

How long has it been since each top-tier team claimed a significant trophy?

By the end of this season, the once-dominant teams in English footballwho obliterated everything in their path just over ten years agowill have gone five years without a trophy.

That got us at Planet Sport to thinking. How long has it been since each Premier League team last won a significant trophy? Let’s get right down to how many days if we’re going to be precise.

The Premier League/First Division, the League Cup, the FA Cup, the Champions League, the Europa League, the UEFA Super Cup, or the Club World Cup are all considered major trophies for the purposes of this definition.

Everything understood? Excellent. Let’s start with the most current event and work our way backwards…

Liverpool – 19 days (correct as of March 18, 2022)

We begin on the red section of Merseyside, as Liverpool won the League Cup for the 202122 season by defeating Chelsea on penalties on February 27.

At Wembley, after 120 exhilarating minutes, the score remained 0-0, and Liverpool led the shootout 11-10 when Blues goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga took the field. He gave the Reds their 49th major championship by blazing his penalty kick well over the crossbar.

Chelsea – 34 days

Fortunately for Kepa, he wasn’t exactly carrying the burden of a severe drought when he approached the penalty spot at Wembley. In actuality, his team had won the 2021 Club World Cup a little more than a week ago.

After extra time, Thomas Tuchel guided his team to victory, with Kai Havertz’s penalty in the 117th minute securing a 2-1 victory over Palmeiras. It happened after Romelu Lukaku’s opening goal for the Blues was cancelled out by Raphael Veiga’s own penalty kick for the Brazilian team.

Leicester – 307 days

Following their amazing title victory six years prior, Leicester added the FA Cup to their collection last May, with Chelsea once more suffering the defeat at Wembley.

However, this time, the tie was resolved in less than 90 minutes thanks to Youri Tielemans’ thunderbolt goal from 25 yards in the second half, which gave the Foxes the victory and secured just their second significant trophy.

Manchester City – 311 days

Given that they are the current Premier League winners, it seems odd for Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering City to be ranked as low as fourth on this list, but it has been almost a year since they won the title.

Their nearest competitors, city rivals Manchester United, falling 2-1 at home to Leicester sealed their sixth top-flight championship, not City themselves. The team led by Guardiola finished 12 points ahead of United.

Arsenal – 594 days

After winning their last league championship in 2004, the idea of an Arsenal trophy drought took on a certain allure. However, the club has since turned that notion on its head with four FA Cup titles.

The most recent of those occurred in August 2020 when, following a scheduling change mandated by Covid, they defeated Chelsea at Wembley. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice to help the Gunners defeat their London rivals 2-1, overturning Christian Pulisic’s early goal for the Blues.

Manchester United – 1,759 days

A Manchester United supporter would have laughed down the phoneline from London at you 10 years ago if you had told them that in 2022, they would be approaching five years without a major prize. That being said, the Red Devils’ most recent trophy was the Europa League in 201617.

Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored goals either side of halftime to help them defeat Ajax 2-0 in Stockholm, where Jose Mourinho guided them to victory.

Tottenham – 5,136 days

Tottenham, who last won a significant trophy in 2008 when they defeated London rivals Chelsea 2-1 in extra time to win the League Cup, are also in the midst of a very unpleasant trophy drought.

The Blues had led at halftime thanks to Didier Drogba, but the extra 30 minutes were needed after Dimitar Berbatov’s equalizing goal with 20 minutes left. However, Spurs only required four of them since Jonathan Woodgate scored the game’s winning goal.

Aston Villa – 9,490 days

Now that we’re actually going back in time, we move on to Villa, a team that has a long history but has gone over 10,000 days without winning a major championship.

In 1996, when they defeated Leeds United 3-0 in the League Cup final, they last won a trophy of this kind. After 20 minutes, Savo Milosevic gave Villa the lead, and goals from Ian Taylor and Dwight Yorke in the second half sealed the victory for Brian Little’s team.

Everton – 9,799 days

This one feels like it may continue on for quite some time even though it has already lasted for almost three decades. Since Everton last took home a comparable trophy, the 1994/95 FA Cup, neighbors Liverpool have amassed 14 major victories.

On that specific occasion, they defeated Manchester United at Wembley 1-0 thanks to a goal from Paul Rideout in the first half.

Leeds – 10,918 days

The final season before the Premier League was established in English football saw Leeds finish four points ahead of Manchester United at the top. On April 26, 1992, the Whites defeated Sheffield United 3-2 on the road to win the season’s penultimate match and clinch their third consecutive English championship.

Three own goals were scored in a genuinely unusual match, two by the Blades’ Rod Wallace and Brian Gayle and one each by Lee Chapman of Leeds and the Blades. Despite Alan Cork also scoring for the hosts, Jon Newsome at least knew which end to shoot for the Whites, and the final score made it clear that West Yorkshire would win the championship.

Norwich – 13,508 days

As we look seven years further back, to the 1985 League Cup final, to find the last time the Canaries won a significant prize, the distance between clubs is undoubtedly starting to widen. At the end of that season, both Norwich and their opponents on that particular day, Sunderland, would be demoted, but it didn’t stop both sets of supporters from enjoying a friendly atmosphere to the extent that the two teams now compete for the “Friendship Trophy” whenever they play. I’m serious, I swear.

The Scottish defender Gordon Chisholm scored an own goal just after halftime to give the Canaries a narrow victory that day at Wembley. After the game, it is said that Sunderland supporters responded with “we scored the goal” while Norwich supporters sang “we won the cup” on the subway. A perfect ten for family-friendly football joking.

West Ham – 15,287 days

We go back seven years, to the 1985 League Cup final, to locate the last time the Canaries won a significant prize, and it is clear that the gap between clubs is starting to widen. Both Norwich and their opponents on that particular day, Sunderland, would be demoted at the conclusion of that campaign, but it didn’t stop both sets of supporters from enjoying a friendly atmosphere to the extent that the two teams now compete for the “Friendship Trophy” everytime they meet. Yes, I do mean it.

Gordon Chisholm, a Scottish defender, scored an own goal just after halftime to give the Canaries a narrow victory on that particular day at Wembley. Apparently, following the game, Sunderland supporters responded to Norwich supporters’ chants of “we won the cup” with the phrase “we scored the goal” on the subway. I give the football banter a perfect 10 out of ten.

Wolves – 15,343 days

Wolves, a fellow “W” team, won the League Cup at Wembley in March, defeating all-conquering Nottingham Forest by a score of 1-0. This occurred two months before West Ham won their last trophy.

Given their possession of the European Cup and victories in the prior two League Cup finals, Forest were the obvious favorites, but Wolves prevailed in this specific matchup between the West and the East Midlands. Midway through the second half, Andy Gray scored a goal that was sufficient to win the League Cup that year and tie the old gold ribbons to it.

Southampton – 16,757 days

As a result of their tendency to be very low scoring and the intense desire of both teams to avoid making a mistake, cup finals are rarely remembered as all-time great. That may help to explain why we have reached yet another championship game that was won by one goal, this time it was Southampton vs. Manchester United in the 1976 FA Cup final.

Bobby Stokes’ goal seven minutes from the end of regulation gave the Saints a 1-0 victory, which was a surprise triumph for the underdogs and their first and only major prize to date. Additionally, it was the final occasion for the Queen to attend a final at Wembley and present the trophy.

Burnley – 22,600 days

We return to the First Division, which Burnley last won in 1960, after a lengthy period in which teams earned their most recent big titles via cup tournaments. The Clarets got 55 points during the time when teams received two points for a victory and finished first overall, beating Wolves by a single point.

Burnley didn’t actually hold the top spot in the table until the very last game of the season, which is one of the most striking instances of hitting form at the perfect time ever. With goals from Brian Pilkington and Trevor Meredith, the Turf Moor team defeated Manchester City at Maine Road in front of 65,000 spectators, eliminating Wolves’ chances of a third consecutive championship and securing their firstand most recentsince 1921.

Newcastle – 24,422 days

The recent change in ownership may have given Magpies supporters new hope for the team, but the north-east has still endured a protracted wait for a trophy. With the exception of the four clubs that have never won a major trophy, no current top-flight club has had a major trophy drought as long as Newcastle.

All you need to know is that Wor Jackie Milburn scored the last time they won a trophy, which was in May 1955 when the Magpies defeated Manchester City 3-1 in the FA Cup final of that season. It has been a truly barren run, so you would have to assume it won’t be long before that streak breaks.

=. Brentford, Brighton, Crystal Palace, & Watford – Never

The main titles mentioned above have never been won by four current top-flight clubs. All have come near, but none have yet to enjoy their special moments of brilliance.

Brentford is the only team out of the four that has never been to a major final, but they are the most recent member of this group to come close, falling to Tottenham 2-0 in the 202021 League Cup semifinals while still a Championship team. The other three, however, have all advanced to the FA Cup final.

Watford tried it in 2019 but lost to Manchester City 6-0, and Palace lost to Manchester United 2-1 in 2016.

The 1983 final between Brighton and United is primarily remembered for the pivotal play by Seagulls striker Gordon Smith in the waning seconds of extra time. Michael Robinson passed the ball to an open Smith eight yards away with the score tied at 2-2. The infamous commentary continued, “And Smith must score.” As a result, Brighton lost the rematch 4-0.
