Stuttgart – The Audi A1 and Q2, which serve as the starting point for the premium brand’s respective hatchback and SUV lineups, will no longer be produced after the current generations have finished their production runs, according to Audi CEO Markus Duesmann.

Audi originally designed the A1 and Q2 with the intention of opening up its brand to a wider audience, but it now seems that the corporation is concentrating on its expensive vehicles.

This week, Duesmann revealed the A1 and Q2 were being discontinued in an interview with the German journal Handelsblatt. He claimed that the corporation would restrict its model selection at the low end while expanding it at the high end.

The CEO had previously discussed the A1’s doom in an interview with Automotive News Europe from the previous year. ANE claims that tighter European emissions laws are causing automakers to reevaluate their plans for tiny cars. It seems that the only way to fulfill these standards is to adopt hybrid electrification technology; however, because the profit margins for tiny cars are so much smaller than those for larger, more profitable models, the financial case for doing so becomes fairly challenging.

But how much more challenging would it be to buy an Audi after the A1 and Q2 are discontinued? Given that the A1 now starts at R447 500 and its larger A3 brother starts at R575 000, purchasers would be looking at a premium of almost R130 000 based on current car prices. Prices for the Audi Q2 begin at R527 400, while those for the Q3 begin at R618 000. There don’t seem to be any current plans to stop producing the Audi A3 or Q3 vehicles.

While Hollywood may not have made a film titled “Honey I Shrunk the Audi,” if it had, the Audi A1 Sportback would have been the star of the show.

However, it’s likely that you won’t be transporting bulky objects to and from the landfill in your Audi A1 Sportback. You’ll probably be rushing to and from town during rush hour, when the A1’s compact size, light controls, and good visibility make it easy to weave around traffic jams.

The three-cylinder 20 TFSI petrol variant is what you want if you spend a lot of time in town. However, there are a number of progressively more potent 30, 35, and 40 four-cylinder variants available that are better suited for longer distances and lengthy interstate drives. In giving up on the market for tiny cars, Audi is not alone. Although joint-venture partner Toyota is pushing forward with plans for a replacement of the Aygo, which is expected to continue with petrol engine to keep costs low, Citroen and Peugeot will discontinue their respective C1 and 108 models for the same reasons.
