How To Remove Wiper Arm Audi A4

Okay, I realize this discussion is somewhat old, but 1) I still found it helpful, and 2) I have some further advice:

* The key is to PUSH the wiper arms, not pull them. The tension transfers away from the far (right) side of the round base of the arm that slides over the bolt if you depress the wiper arm against the windshield, releasing the pressure of the blade and wiper arm spring. The final bit of cantilever pressure that typically holds the blades against the glass is being released.

So let me know if you’re interested in purchasing some used, slightly damaged, but functional windshield cowls. They’re useful and excellent for a cheap B5 A4 build, however someone with any skill could definitely repair the top edge and restore them to like-new condition. $20 plus postage for both sides.

How are the windshield wiper arms removed?

You can begin the project as soon as you obtain a fresh set of appropriate wiper blades. Although removing windshield wipers isn’t difficult, understanding how to do it for the first time if you haven’t seen it done before can be challenging. Start by removing the windshield wiper arm from the glass and placing an old towel on the ground. If the arm snaps back into place, the towel will catch it and guard against harm to the windshield. As an alternative, you might drop the arm to the windshield after removing the previous wiper blade and cover it with a sock until you’re ready to swap out the blade.

Find the tiny tab on the windshield wiper blade that connects it to the wiper arm. The old wiper blade can be removed from the wiper arm hook by sliding it off by depressing this tiny tab. To remove the blade from the pin on the wiper’s arm if the windshield wipers have a pin instead of a hook, you need first pull up on the blade’s tab. If necessary, you can additionally press or lift the tab with the use of a flat-head screwdriver.

Photo 3: Other wipers have a locking clip

Slide the locking clip out by lifting the wiper arm a few inches off the glass. Pull the arm away from the splined shaft after lowering it.

Every wiper arm has a hinge at the base that enables it to flex as it follows the window’s curve. Even with a fresh blade, if the wiper skips over some areas, it’s likely that the hinge is corroded and binding. Due to their little use, rear window wipers are the most frequently affected.

Although you can grease the hinge, this is only a short-term solution.

Usually, the rust and binding come back. Replace the wiper arm in order to solve the issue permanently (available at an auto parts store).

A splined shaft accepts all wiper arms (Photo 1). Some have nuts holding them in place. Simply lift the protective cap, release the nut, and pull off the arm to replace that type (Photo 2).

The locking clip secures the other type in place. Install the replacement arm after unlocking it as demonstrated in the bottom picture (Photo 3).
