The Audi S6 is the A6 range’s low-performance model, sitting between the swift A6 diesels and the supreme RS6. It combines the RS6 and Bentley Continental GT’s superb twin-turbo V8 engine with the A6’s roomy, elegant, and finely constructed cabin, albeit with a less potent tuning.
The S6 has sports car-baiting speed, being able to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in as little as 4.4 seconds thanks to a standard S-tronic dual-clutch gearbox and Quattro all-wheel drive, but it also has a fantastic engine that can cut off half of its cylinders while idling to save gasoline. It’s difficult to find fault with the S6 as an all-weather, daily driver performance vehicle.
A four-door saloon or the sportier S6 Avant estate, which has a larger boot than a BMW 5 Series Touring, are both available as options for the S6. The wagon doesn’t feel at all diminished by its heavier body, and if anything, the increased mobility will make owning it more enjoyable. However, if you prioritize chassis dynamics over engine entertainment value, the S6 is undoubtedly not the best option because of its safety-first all-wheel drive setup and excessively soft steering.
Engines, performance and drive
The Bentley Continental GT and Audi RS6 both share a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine that powers the S6. It produces 444 bhp in this form, which is precisely the same as the RS4 and RS5, and 30 bhp more than the variant from before the facelift. The saloon S6 can accelerate from a complete stop to 62 mph in just 4.4 seconds, while the Avant needs 4.6 seconds, and both vehicles can reach a (restricted) top speed of 155 mph. The S6 proves to be a delightful partner on winding roads. It hides its size and is more agile than we expected, especially when equipped with the rear-wheel steering system that is an option.
