It will also need to check off the box of an accomplished long-distance traveler. After all, many Australian families like doing that on long weekends, during school breaks, or whenever the desire strikes. Most of us who live in large cities can reach a charming country village in under two hours, depending on traffic of course.
Fortunately, the large Audi is also easy to maneuver through traffic, but this upgrade is more regional.
To test a few things, we drove the Q7 through Wagga Wagga and into Griffith in the NSW Riverina. In order, long-distance fuel consumption, coarse-chip B-road ride quality, comfort, and flexibility.
According to the numbers, the 3.0-liter turbo diesel V6 in 50TDI form produces an easy 200kW and 600Nm, making it appear on paper to be a simple and effective long-distance touring SUV. Recall that the starting price of our 50TDI is $106,900 before on-road expenses.

While a sudden pothole will give you a jolt, the typical rutted, uneven rural roads we’re used to in Australia are no match for the Q7’s suspension system. The large wheels and low-profile tyres don’t come at the expense of bump absorption. This European SUV rides far more comfortably than some others.
Some Q7 owners we contact with claim that the vehicle can seem a touch large in populated areas. While I may not always concur with that statement, it is undeniable that once you are outside in the countryside, you immediately feel at home. The larger, angled main-street parking places, the wider lanes, and the overall sense of space on the road that you find in many small country towns are ideal for the huge Q7. Australia is fortunate in that parking is rarely a problem after you leave any of the major cities.
Negatives? Actually, there is only one, and we only learned about it after we left for our road trip since we forgot to check beforehand. Simple to accomplish when you drive as many automobiles as we do. There isn’t even a space-saving spare tire to speak of. We were reminded that there isn’t a spare tire beneath the luggage floor during our normal stop to check tire pressure after we had left the sprawl of Sydney.
It’s interesting to note that a week or so after we left, a tyre warning appeared due to a huge nail left by construction workers on the site next to CarAdvice HQ.

We mounted the wheel on a trolley jack and some wheel stands in our garage before bringing it to our friends at JAX Artarmon to have the puncture fixed. A new tire wasn’t necessary because it was in a part of the tyre that could be fixed.
If you want to take a lengthy vacation in your Q7 (or frequent lengthy excursions), I’d recommend investing in a spare and learning to live with the extra space it will take up in the luggage compartment. If you don’t have one, you might regret it. Given the size of Australia and the vast distances between its communities, it is undoubtedly something to take into account.
Overall, though, the Audi Q7 is a great choice for a family vacation vehicle. It’s comfy, roomy, and effective, and it completes the task with ease. Although not everyone can play up at the six-figure luxury SUV market, those who can will adore the Audi Q7’s adaptability. In fact, if you can only justify having one, it functions as the lone family car.
