I’ll admit that when I saw the 2017 Audi RS 7’s price, my opinion of it was already formed. The sportiest version of Audi’s fashionable A7 starts at $111,650, which is a significant expense. The situation in my test car, an RS 7 Performance, a new trim level for 2017, quickly worsened from there.
For a cool $130,450, including destination fee, the RS 7 Performance adds additional horsepower, suspension changes, and bigger wheels. The ultimate sticker price came to $136,975 when a few additional safety features and a black Alcantara headliner were added.

Serious Speed
The RS 7 moves really quickly. The engine, a 4.0-liter V-8 twin-turbo, is where it all begins. It generates 560 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque in basic RS 7 versions. The RS 7 Performance includes an overboost capability that may briefly increase torque output to 553 pounds-feet for even more acceleration, bringing that number up to 605 horsepower.
As well as all-wheel drive with a rear sport differential that allows torque to shift from the left to the right when slippage is detected, an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters is standard.
The car’s time from 0 to 60 mph isn’t significantly shortened by the additional horsepower, though: According to Audi, the Performance RS 7 model completes the sprint in 3.6 seconds as opposed to the regular RS 7 models’ 3.7 seconds. Although the top speed of the Performance is increased to 190 mph from 174 mph in the basic RS 7, I didn’t reach those speeds throughout my week of testing on public roads.
Even with all that power, the RS 7 is fairly docile when you lightly depress the throttle, making it simple to cruise quietly along the road. However, if you tilt the pedal past a certain point, the world becomes immediately hazy. It’s astonishing how quickly this car can accelerate.
With a curb weight of around 4,500 pounds and a big footprint, the RS 7 is not a little vehicle. But the engine propels it forward with smooth acceleration from any pace, as though it were made of paper. It’s quite addictive.
On RS 7 Performance vehicles, an amazing sport exhaust is included. Anywhere above 3,000 rpm, it spits and crackles during shifts, roars when accelerating, and generally causes havoc. I kicked the RS 7 into sport mode, lowered all four windows, and roused the dead whenever I came across a tunnel or underpass. I was smitten.
Beyond Acceleration
In addition to increasing power, the RS 7 Performance adds two features that improve the driving experience. Standard brakes made of carbon-ceramic material give this beast the extra stopping power it needs. Audi’s Dynamic Ride Control technology is also included as standard, which helps prevent the RS 7 from being a one-trick pony by giving it nimble handling to match its speed. Dynamic Ride Control is a totally mechanical technology as opposed to other performance cars’ adaptable shock absorbers, which are electrically controlled. Through central valves, it connects the shock absorbers at the RS 7’s opposing corners. The RS 7 is kept flatter during acceleration, braking, and cornering by those valves, which regulate the oil flow from one shock to the next.
Despite being an older system than contemporary adaptive suspensions, it nevertheless performs fantastically. Although the RS 7 is a big vehicle, it doesn’t drive as such. It has more than enough power to feel speedy off the line, and it is remarkably stable in corners, reducing the amount of body roll that would otherwise cause the car to shake laterally.
On required premium fuel, fuel economy is predictably bad at 15/25/18 mpg city/highway/combined. In terms of rivals, this is in the middle. In combined driving, the Porsche Panamera Turbo achieves 3 mpg more than the BMW M6 Gran Coupe, which is 2 mpg worse.
Interior and Technology
The RS 7’s interior closely resembles the A7’s in terms of layout and appearance, and it even includes many of the same standard amenities, such as four-zone automatic climate control, navigation, front and rear parking sensors, and heated front seats, despite having four rather than five seats.
Particularly in the RS 7 Performance, the materials and ergonomics are first-rate. As I saw in my test vehicle, that automobile adds athletic seats that can be upholstered in blue-accented carbon fiber inlays and optional black Valcona leather and Alcantara with honeycomb stitching. They are, in my opinion, more accommodating and pleasant than most sport seats while still offering enough bolstering to keep you safe during spirited driving.
Although Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are supported by default on Audi’s multimedia system, there is a restriction on using them. It is not a touchscreen because of the screen’s high dash positioning. All multimedia system inputs are routed through a rotary knob controller located between the front seats. Using Android Auto and Apple CarPlay with a physical controller is difficult because they were both created with touchscreens in mind. I found that a few features of compatible apps like Spotify and Google Maps, which I frequently use, were inaccessible in Android Auto.
A few driver aid systems, like adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane keep assist, and a corner view camera system, are optional with the RS 7, which is my only remaining quibble with the vehicle. It seems a little cheap on a car that starts at north of six figures.
Conclusion
The loss of the 2017 RS 7 was accompanied only by sorrow, not sweetness. The moment I pressed the accelerator for the first time, my original cynicism about it started to fade, and within a few hours, it was entirely gone. This automobile has an addictive top speed, and the suspension maintains the vehicle’s balance and stability even while accelerating quickly. I appreciate the look as it is; some might want it to be more suggestive of the car’s performance capability.
