Your car key is very much trackable to anyone nearby if it offers keyless entry and push-button starting capabilities. Not simply the automobile keys are capable of storing data and being exposed. The internal computer, keys, locks, and immobilizer systems in current cars can all be hacked. Can remote car keys be tracked?

Guest Post from the MIT School of Engineering’s Ask an Engineer series

Maybe if the remote is the appropriate kind, you have lots of time, and you have the necessary technical skills (but don’t get your hopes up)…

You’ve once again misplaced your automobile keys. You’re certain they’re in your home, but despite looking under the refrigerator and between the cushions of your couch, you were unable to locate them. You have a keyless remote that appears to be able to interact with your automobile, and you are wondering if there is a way to make it speak with you and let you know where it is. Theoretically, it is feasible, according to electrical engineering and computer science doctoral candidate Phillip Nadeau, “but it depends on the kind of remote-entry system we’re talking about. Even then, it can be difficult based on the manufacturer and technologies employed.

Keyless remotes come in two different categories.

Passive Keyless Entry (PKE) and Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) both operate in unique ways. Only when you push a button on the remote do RKE devices send a radio signal to your car. “These gadgets are often only equipped with a transmitter, says Nadeau. Unfortunately, this prevents you from calling the remote. It can’t hear you any more than a skeleton key can.

Your chances are improved if you have a PKE remote. You don’t have to press buttons with PKE devices to lock or unlock your automobile. According to Nadeau, the signal the automobile sends simultaneously powers the remote and requests a legitimate authentication number to open the car. Similar technology is used by RFID card scanners to grant you entrance to a building without requiring you to take your ID card out of your pocket. A PKE remote, in contrast to an RKE gadget, contains both a transmitter and a receiver, enabling it to hear you call it using special radio gear even though you’re simply pretending to be your automobile! Theoretically, you could create a special gadget that doubles as a radio transmitter and receiver, retransmitting the signal from your car and waiting for a response from your keys. However, if you have the technological know-how to build such a device, it should work. This is not a simple or cheap option.

According to Nadeau, as long as you have a lot of free time. “To elicit a response, the interrogator must be a short distance from the remote. Most of the time, this proximity restriction is beneficial. People may steal your automobile out of your driveway while the keys are safely inside your home if PKE remotes have a long range. However, it also means that in order to locate your keys, you will need to search every inch of your home with your tools. You might as well go back and rummage through that junk drawer one more time rather than spending the time and money developing some fancy radio equipment in order to find your keys.

Even if it takes time, this approach has potential. If you leave your car key fob at a restaurant, for instance, there’s a chance that one of the staff members will have found it and will be ready to give it to you.

Visiting Lost and Found Locations

The majority of places have departments or lost and found bins that deal with stuff individuals forget. Before going there, find out whether the places you’ve been have lost and found offices and make contact with them. If they do or do not have your key fob, a customer service agent could let you know.

Contacting the Authorities

Even though calling the police isn’t the most effective way to find your car key fob, it’s worth a try if all else fails. Your key fob might not be discovered by the authorities, but there’s a potential that someone found it and turned it in.

Can a key fob be turned off?

Yes, your key fob can be removed from the system if you lose it. If the key fob is picked up by someone else, this will stop it from being used. Make sure to carefully follow the instructions because different security systems will have a different procedure for erasing the key fob.

You should take your security system into account while deleting your key fob. For instance, deleting a key fob from a touchscreen panel will differ from deleting a key fob from an alphanumeric keypad-based hardwired system. For key fob programming, some panels will have a separate area, while others will only let you change the settings through zone programming.

Through *56 programming, you can remove a key fob from a Honeywell VISTA panel. Start by typing the Installer Code + [8] + [00] to enter programming mode. The installed code by default is 4112. The “Installer Code 20” message ought to appear. You have a fixed keypad if the display only shows a 20 and nothing else. When you have a 6160 keypad or another comparable keypad, come back to this point and press [*99] to end programming. Press [*56] to start zone programming after that. Then press the [*] key twice, followed by the two-digit zone number, on the key fob’s first button. Enter [00] to set the Zone Type (ZT) to “Not Used” and turn off the zone once it has been shown. To confirm, press the [*] key. Then you will be asked to “Delete Zone?” For “Yes,” press [1]. For each button zone that was configured on the key fob, repeat this procedure. Press [00] to end zone programming once the last button zone has been erased and you’ve been taken back to the “Enter Zone Number” screen. Press [*99] to end programming, then.

A VISTA-15P has reserved key fob zones that are 49 through 56 in number, whereas a VISTA-20P and a VISTA-21iP have reserved key fob zones that are 49 through 64. Any zone that is higher than zone 8 can, however, be utilized for a key fob. This is why it’s crucial to always note the zone connected to your wifi devices so you can quickly access them in the future.

An exclusive menu for configuring key fob devices is available on Honeywell LYNX Touch or Honeywell Lyric Controller devices. Go to Security > More (if using a LYNX Touch) > Tools > input the installer code (the default is 4112) > Program > Keys from the home screen. To access key fob programming, click this. To highlight the key fob device you want to remove, click on it. Select “Delete” from the screen’s bottom menu after that. When the panel asks if you’re sure, choose “Yes.”

When uninstalling a SiXFOB from the Lyric controller, you will be required to hit any key on the fob to finish the deletion procedure. By doing this, the fob will be unpaired from the system and can then be used on another system. Delete the SiXFOB from the programming if it has been lost. Pressing any button will finish the deletion procedure if the keyfob is discovered and used on your machine, even if it happens long later.
