I didn’t believe a Google result, so I went to the Nissan website (the official automaker’s website, not the salesman’s website from North Carolina) and investigated the Maxima’s specifications for myself.
In addition to having a wheelbase that is over two full inches longer than the Maxima’s, the Altima’s overall length is also only somewhat longer. The Maxima is only marginally wider than the vehicle it’s meant to overshadow, and the Altima is slightly taller than both the all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive variants of the Maxima.
The Altima has significantly better front passenger legroom, somewhat more rear passenger legroom, and a full cubic foot more cargo space inside.
All things considered, it is a larger vehicle than the Maxima, largely because of its new platform.

They hardly barely appear to have changed at all!
The only issue I can see right now is that there are just four-cylinder engines available for the Altima today, and neither of them can compete with the 300 HP of the Maxima V6. But that’s the only thing stopping me from concluding that purchasing a Maxima is pointless. They could easily threaten the Maxima’s existence with a serious Altima Nismo, and perhaps that would be worthwhile.
This, in my opinion, is more a sign of Nissan’s peculiar model lifecycle timing, with the Maxima becoming stuck in an odd position by possibly not developing sufficiently in its most recent generation before the Altima arrived. Who knows if the formerly four-door sports vehicle really has a future with sedan sales in freefall.
