Nissan produces and sells the Nissan Maxima, a full-size sedan that serves as the company’s flagship model, especially in China, the Middle East, and North America. It is now in its eighth iteration. It replaced the previous Datsun 810 and made its début for model year 1982 as the Datsun Maxima. When Datsun sold the premium 810 as the 810 Maxima in North America for model year 1981, the moniker Maxima first appeared. Early iterations of the Maxima, like the 810, were based on the Datsun/Nissan Bluebird. When the Datsun brand was phased out for model year 1985, it was renamed Nissan Maxima.
The Maxima has been marketed as an upscale option to the Altima and, previous to 1993, the Stanza throughout its lifetime in North America by providing features such a V6 engine and a luxury interior. Prior to the start of North American production in Smyrna, Tennessee for the 2004 model year, the majority of Maximas were produced in Oppama, Japan.
The Nissan Cefiro and Teana have also been rebadged with the Maxima brand in various foreign countries (see below). The Maxima insignia was initially used in Japan’s domestic market on occasion as a more upscale Bluebird.
In Tennessee, Nissan has started producing the eighth-generation Maxima “4-door Sports Car.”

Bill Haslam, U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander, and Tennessee Economic and Community Development Commissioner Randy Boyd joined plant workers to celebrate the start of production for the brand-new 2016 Nissan Maxima, Nissan’s Smyrna Vehicle Assembly Plant continued to hold the title of top-producing automotive plant in North America.
There were hardly any auto employment in Tennessee when Nissan arrived there more than 30 years ago, according to Alexander. “After three decades, the car industry accounts for nearly one-third of our manufacturing jobs, 80 counties now have auto suppliers, and family incomes have increased. I want to express my gratitude to Nissan for giving talented Tennesseans thousands of opportunities.”
In January 2003, the first Maxima built in the United States left the Smyrna assembly line. Nissan has now produced approximately 800,000 Maxima sedans at the factory, with more than 60,000 of those going to markets throughout the world. The midsize Altima sedan and the all-electric Nissan LEAF are constructed on the same assembly line as the Maxima, one of the six vehicles now built at the Smyrna plant. Nissan’s Decherd Powertrain Plant in Tennessee is also where the new 3.5-liter VQ-series V6 engine for the Maxima is put together.
With today’s debut, Nissan and Tennessee start a new chapter in their successful and long-lasting cooperation, which is characterized by high-quality products and the workforce’s ingenuity, according to Haslam. “We want to congratulate Nissan for continuing to invest here and contributing to Tennessee’s growth as a state that leads the industry,” said the statement.

More than 8,400 employees work at the Nissan Smyrna Plant, which opened its doors in 1983. Under the Datsun brand, the Maxima nameplate debuted in 1980 with a 1981 model. It was a modified version of the Japanese Bluebird (910) model with a bigger front end to make room for the larger engine. The Maxima was only produced in Oppama, Japan, for over 20 years. The vehicle wasn’t put together at Nissan’s Smyrna, Tennessee, plant until 2004. Up until 1984, the first-generation Maxima was offered as a four-door sedan or a five-door station wagon. At the New York International Auto Show, the 2016 Nissan Maxima made its official premiere. It has a luxury interior and a strong engine. Nissan set out to make the first day of production of the eighth-generation Maxima a big one. The best indoor procession ever took place, and it was magnificent.
In a magnificent celebration, the Smyrna plant personnel were taken through the facilities by the marching band from Tennessee State University. The evolution of the Maxima has been baffling, with modernism and freshness simultaneously gaining and losing ground with each redesign, from three-way adjustable suspensions and LCD digital tachometers in the 1980s to continuously variable gearboxes and touchscreen infotainment in 2022. The idea that some 21st-century automobile designs lack enthusiasm may have some merit; Nissan’s decision to disregard the Maxima’s Datsun Bluebird heritage on the US market would cause many aficionados to believe as much.
