Nissan produces and sells the Nissan Maxima, a full-size sedan that serves as the company’s flagship model, especially in China, the Middle East, and North America. It is now in its eighth iteration. It replaced the previous Datsun 810 and made its début for model year 1982 as the Datsun Maxima. When Datsun sold the premium 810 as the 810 Maxima in North America for model year 1981, the moniker Maxima first appeared. Early iterations of the Maxima, like the 810, were based on the Datsun/Nissan Bluebird. When the Datsun brand was phased out for model year 1985, it was renamed Nissan Maxima.
The Maxima has been marketed as an upscale option to the Altima and, previous to 1993, the Stanza throughout its lifetime in North America by providing features such a V6 engine and a luxury interior. Prior to the start of North American production in Smyrna, Tennessee for the 2004 model year, the majority of Maximas were produced in Oppama, Japan.
The Nissan Cefiro and Teana have also been rebadged with the Maxima brand in various foreign countries (see below). The Maxima insignia was initially used in Japan’s domestic market on occasion as a more upscale Bluebird.
In Tennessee, Nissan has started producing the eighth-generation Maxima “4-door Sports Car.”
Tennessee’s NASHVILLE As Gov. Bill Haslam, U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander, and Tennessee Economic and Community Development Commissioner Randy Boyd joined plant workers to celebrate the start of production for the brand-new 2016 Nissan Maxima, Nissan’s Smyrna Vehicle Assembly Plant continued to hold the title of top-producing automotive plant in North America.
There were hardly any auto employment in Tennessee when Nissan arrived there more than 30 years ago, according to Alexander. “After three decades, the car industry accounts for nearly one-third of our manufacturing jobs, 80 counties now have auto suppliers, and family incomes have increased. I want to express my gratitude to Nissan for giving talented Tennesseans thousands of opportunities.”
In January 2003, the first Maxima built in the United States left the Smyrna assembly line. Nissan has now produced approximately 800,000 Maxima sedans at the factory, with more than 60,000 of those going to markets throughout the world. The midsize Altima sedan and the all-electric Nissan LEAF are constructed on the same assembly line as the Maxima, one of the six vehicles now built at the Smyrna plant. Nissan’s Decherd Powertrain Plant in Tennessee is also where the new 3.5-liter VQ-series V6 engine for the Maxima is put together.
With today’s debut, Nissan and Tennessee start a new chapter in their successful and long-lasting cooperation, which is characterized by high-quality products and the workforce’s ingenuity, according to Haslam. “We want to congratulate Nissan for continuing to invest here and contributing to Tennessee’s growth as a state that leads the industry,” said the statement.
Predictive Forward Collision Warning, Forward Emergency Braking, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and Blind Spot Warning are just a few of the numerous safety, security, and driving aids available in the eighth generation of Nissan’s iconic “4-Door Sports Car.” This vehicle boasts 300 horsepower in addition to a bold exterior design, premium interior cockpit, and a long list of other features. Additionally, it includes Nissan’s brand-new Driver Attention Alert system, which keeps track of steering input patterns and warns the driver if drowsy or inattentive driving is identified. This summer, U.S. Nissan stores will offer the 2016 Maxima.
According to John Martin, Nissan’s senior vice president of Manufacturing, Supply Chain Management and Purchasing, “today’s unveiling of the all-new Maxima marks the beginning of an exciting year for Nissan’s U.S. line-up, with new versions of the Altima, Sentra, and TITAN due later this year.” The all-new Maxima will help Nissan break that record this year. “New models produced in our U.S. plants in Smyrna, Tennessee, and Canton, Mississippi, helped to catapult Nissan to over 1.4 million sales in the U.S. in 2014,” the company said.
More than 8,400 employees work at the Nissan Smyrna Plant, which opened its doors in 1983. The Smyrna plant produced more than 648,000 automobiles in 2014, making it the most productive auto assembly facility in North America. The award-winning Altima, Maxima, all-electric LEAF, Rogue crossover, Pathfinder SUV, and Infiniti QX60 luxury crossover are presently built by Smyrna workers.
Earlier times and updates
Under the Datsun brand, the Maxima nameplate debuted in 1980 with a 1981 model. It was a modified version of the Japanese Bluebird (910) model with a bigger front end to make room for the larger engine. The Maxima was only produced in Oppama, Japan, for over 20 years. The vehicle wasn’t put together at Nissan’s Smyrna, Tennessee, plant until 2004. Up until 1984, the first-generation Maxima was offered as a four-door sedan or a five-door station wagon. It offered two engine choices, a four-speed automatic transmission, and a special five-speed manual transmission.
Nissan made a number of improvements to the Maxima between the second and seventh versions to enhance the driving experience. For example, updated powertrains, the installation of paddle shifters behind the steering wheel, and cutting-edge safety features like a RearView Monitor. The vehicle had a 3.5-liter V6 engine and an Xtronic continuously variable transmission by the conclusion of the seventh generation in 2014. In 34 years, the increase in horsepower from 118 to 290 was dramatic.
After 42 years, Nissan has discontinued the Maxima.
- Nissan has declared that the Maxima will stop being produced in 2023.
- The eighth generation of the vehicle, which has been produced for 42 years and debuted with the Datsun 810, will be the final one.
- Stay tuned for future Maxima news, Nissan teases, hinting at its upcoming EV sedans and indicating the possibility of electric use of the Maxima moniker.
Given that Nissan has hinted at upcoming electric sedans and stated to keep tuned for future Maxima news, this doesn’t necessarily imply the nameplate is lost forever. Nissan’s iconic EV hatchback, the Leaf, is anticipated to go out of production soon, refocusing the firm on a brand-new EV strategy. Nissan’s EV ambitions include the production of proprietary solid-state batteries as well as 23 new electrified models, 15 of which will be released by 2030.
The end of the current-generation Maxima won’t come as a big shock to fans because the car has consistently gotten bigger and lost some of its driver-engaging qualities. Nevertheless, the Maxima has a long history of serving as a vehicle for enjoyable driving. With a rear-wheel-drive setup and a 2.4-liter inline-six engine from a 240Z, the first-generation sedan began life as a sort of hot-rod. The second generation of the Maxima began production in 1985, and soon after, front-wheel drive was introduced. The boxy body persisted, though, through the third generation of the Maxima’s final year of manufacture in 1994.
Despite having front-wheel drive, the Maxima had a reputation for being adaptable and comfortable. Although the interior materials of the Maxima were never the best, a customized model could win a drag race against a Porsche 911 from the 996 generation. The Maxima has won Wards 10 Best Engines awards for 14 years running, starting in 1995 when the VQ30DE V6 engine was introduced in the Maxima and was consistently improved in succeeding years. In fact, the Maxima has been widely regarded as a sleeper since the fourth-generation model was released in 1994. In addition to having a smooth and powerful engine, Maximas have been successful in bringing driving pleasure in large part due to its adherence to the manual transmission, which was available in either a five- or six-speed from 1980 to 2007.
The evolution of the Maxima has been baffling, with modernism and freshness simultaneously gaining and losing ground with each redesign, from three-way adjustable suspensions and LCD digital tachometers in the 1980s to continuously variable gearboxes and touchscreen infotainment in 2022. The idea that some 21st-century automobile designs lack enthusiasm may have some merit; Nissan’s decision to disregard the Maxima’s Datsun Bluebird heritage on the US market would cause many aficionados to believe as much. For nostalgic auto lovers, waxing poetic is a required stage of life, and the end of the Maxima era is no exception. But let’s hope the clues of a resurrected Maxima moniker lead to future EV excitement.

Nissan will stop making the Maxima the following year.
- The eighth iteration of the sedan is the current model, which debuted in 2015.
- Nissan suggests that a future electric vehicle might use the Maxima moniker.
The Nissan Maxima will be discontinued in 2019 after eight generations and more than four decades of production. Nissan told C/D that the sedan’s manufacture would terminate in the middle of 2023. Nissan only sold 3753 Maximas in the first half of 2022, compared to 78,610 Altimas sold during the same period, indicating a recent decline in sales.
However, Nissan’s official statement indicates that the business is “prioritizing electric vehicles” and urges us to “keep tuned for future Nissan Maxima news.” This suggests that another Maxima may still be in the works. This suggests, in our opinion, that the 2025 Nissan EV sedan will carry the Maxima moniker. The vehicle will share the same Mississippi assembly line as an Infiniti sedan, and teaser images reveal a curved roofline and a futuristic face resembling that of the Ariya crossover.
For a while, the current generation was our top-rated large sedan, but as it has gotten older, it has lost some of its relevance. Ford canceling the Taurus and Hyundai and Kia both ceasing production of the Azera and Cadenza have contributed to the segment’s decline. Toyota is still in business since it will replace the Avalon in 2023 with the Crown, and Dodge and Chrysler are still selling the 300 and Charger cars despite their age.
We’ll have to wait and see what the future holds for a potential Maxima EV, though we might soon learn more information about this new vehicle, which might make its debut within the next several years.

NISSANMaxima
In 2018, Nissan’s flagship model for the American market, now in its seventh generation, received a minor redesign. At the Los Angeles Auto Show, it was unveiled.
From being a big sedan to a performance sedan, the Nissan Maxima changed. Although it is a front-wheel-drive automobile, it was upgraded to look like a sport sedan when it was debuted in 2015. Both the power to weight ratio and the mass distribution were favorable.
Interior and engine of the Nissan Maxima
We are beyond thrilled that the 2016 Nissan Maxima is finally in production. Nissan began manufacturing the new sedan at the Smyrna Assembly and Battery Plant in Tennessee on April 21. At the New York International Auto Show, the 2016 Nissan Maxima made its official premiere. It has a luxury interior and a strong engine. Nissan set out to make the first day of production of the eighth-generation Maxima a big one. The best indoor procession ever took place, and it was magnificent.
In a magnificent celebration, the Smyrna plant personnel were taken through the facilities by the marching band from Tennessee State University. The 2016 Nissan Maxima was launched inside the factory in a big celebration with lights, music, and confetti. If Nissan doesn’t already know how to show off a new car, the 2016 Maxima’s debut at the New York International Auto Show should suffice.
One-third of Tennessee’s manufacturing jobs are now associated with the car industry, which welcomed Nissan to Tennessee more than 30 years ago. The Smyrna plant produced the first Maxima produced in the United States in 2013, and as of now, the plant has produced over 800,000 Maximas. Six distinct Nissan vehicles are produced at the Smyrna plant in addition to the Maxima.
