From Scottsmoor to Micco, a new philanthropic group is committed to assisting young people in Brevard County.
Timmy Vee, a former radio host for WA1A-FM, is the creator of the organization 72 Miles of Giving. The longtime morning show co-host approached Bruce Nelson Jr., owner of Coastal Hyundai, Cocoa Hyundai, and Coastal Mitsubishi, as well as his sisters Michelle and Tracy, soon after leaving the station in February after 24 years. The goal was to establish a Nelson family fund that would primarily aid young Brevardians in need.
It’s something I’ve actually been thinking about and creating for at least five years, Vee remarked. “That’s why Bruce replied, “Let’s do it,” when I went to him with my idea and my business plan. He’s incredible. One meeting was required.”
The Children’s Hunger Project recently received a donation from the family to use an empty showroom at Cocoa Hyundai’s new site as its new headquarters and a space to prepare 1,400 underprivileged schoolchildren’s weekend meals throughout the school year. In honor of the family patriarch Bruce Nelson Sr., who gave his time and money to numerous children’s charities, the foundation renamed the showroom the Bruce Nelson Child Hunger Center on March 26.
Nelson Jr. claimed that the fund will make it possible for his family to help additional Brevardians. We want to do more for this neighborhood, he declared. “Brevard spans 72 miles. All funds would remain in Brevard, which is why we felt it would be acceptable.”
Vee, who will run 72 Miles of Giving out of Coastal Mitsubishi, expressed his hope that other prosperous Brevard companies will be motivated by the fund to give more to regional organizations.
He remarked, “That would be lovely to see. “Here, we already have a fantastic county. But imagine how wonderful it would be if everyone who could contributed a little bit more, like the Nelsons?”
