Although Lexus only triumphed in less than half of the categories, U.S. News nonetheless named it the superior vehicle overall. This is largely attributable to how well the high-end brand performed in the crucial areas of safety and performance. In the latter, Lexus cars typically outperform even the most sporty Toyota models in terms of handling.

In terms of height, the new model is 30mm/25mm lower than the outgoing model at 1685mm (GX, GXL, Cruiser) or 1690mm (Edge).

This applies nicely to the internal area as well; there is much more room, and the cabin has much more design flair than before.

The big talking point, though, is the external appearance. Although our Facebook walk-around video received mixed feedback, I believe in person it appears to be very robust. The Edge model stands out because it has a distinctive appearance thanks to its model-specific front bumper, grille, skid plate, wheel-arch mouldings, fog-lamp surrounds, and rear bumper. Additionally, it has unusual 19-inch alloy wheels.

Even the low-grade GX with its 17-inch rims looks quite stylish, especially in the vivid blue color. Lower-grade models also appear quite slick.

Though we have no doubt someone will do it, you’ll have to use your imagination to visualize what it might look like with side steps or a body package with a more outrageous rear spoiler. Additionally, there is just a hardtop version of the RAV4; if you were hoping for a soft top model like we saw back in the 1990s, you’ll be sorely disappointed.

See what you think of the faux leather trim in the interior images. Less on the interior next.
