D4 Engine: What Does It Mean?

In the D4 engine, fuel is pumped directly into the combustion chamber at extremely high pressure (direct injection). Air is compressed during combustion, and fuel is fed directly into the combustion chamber at a very exact timing. The aim behind this approach is to enable the engine to operate leaner, resulting in fewer fuel consumption and pollutants.

The D4 engine is an improvement over the VVTI in theory, but experience has shown that it doesn’t take much to mess up the engine’s performance, and problems like surging, a rough idle, and engine stutter are common.

Unfortunately, given the lack of industry-wide product knowledge on these engines, these issues are not that simple to solve. This frequently results in costly, pointless, and time-consuming repairs.

Variable Valve Timing Induction is referred to as VVTI. The performance of this engine type, which is much more traditional, is enhanced by optimizing valve timing. It is a tested method that works well and is quite trouble-free.
