You use your tow vehicle’s engine the most when going uphill. There might not be a requirement for 4 wheel drive if you can ascend the slope with traction. While it’s possible that your speed will decrease as you ascend the slope, 4 wheel drive is not advised in this circumstance until you actually require the extra traction support.
