Can I connect my phone to my dash cam?

Due of the convenience and functionality they provide to Dash Cam users, Wi-Fi connected Dash Cams are growing in popularity. Wi-Fi equipped Dash Cams let you monitor live video feeds from your phone screen while driving, modify Dash Cam settings from your phone, and stream and download videos directly to your phone. Video files can be immediately transmitted to third parties after they have been downloaded onto your phone.

The BlackVue and the Lukas Dash Cam Range are our two most popular Wi-Fi enabled dash cam models.

A companion smartphone App has been created by the dash cam maker for each of these Wi-Fi equipped dash cams. These Apps are freely downloadable and may be downloaded from your App store with ease. Most dash cam apps are compatible with iOS (iPhone) or Android devices.

The Wi-Fi connection between your smartphone and the dash cam is free. Additionally, your mobile data is not utilized. Your phone detects a straightforward Wi-Fi signal that was transmitted by your dash cam. The Wi-Fi connection’s sole purpose after being established with your smartphone is to enable you to use the App.

Here are some procedures to follow in order to make the Dash Cam Wi-Fi connection easier and more dependable when connecting it to your smartphone:

Before establishing a Wi-Fi connection with your smartphone using your dash cam, be sure you are inside the car.

The Wi-Fi signal is not as strong as, say, the Wi-Fi signal from your home internet. For your smartphone to receive a good signal from the dash cam, you must be roughly 5 meters away. If your car is in your garage and you are inside, you won’t be able to connect to the Dash Cam Wi-Fi signal since the Wi-Fi signal cannot pass through walls or doors.

2. For the dash cam to transmit its Wi-Fi signal, it must be turned on and powered.

The Wi-Fi signal won’t be active if your dash cam is off. Additionally, the Wi-Fi on the majority of Dash Cams only functions while you are driving, not while parking. When connecting to Wi-Fi, make sure your camera is not in parking mode.

3. You need to remove or forget every Wi-Fi connection from your smartphone.

One Wi-Fi signal can only be connected to by your smartphone at once. Therefore, you won’t be able to connect to your Dash Cam if your phone is already connected to the Wi-Fi at home or at work. Similar to how your smartphone would look for and attempt to connect to your house Wi-Fi if you are linked to your dash cam and it hasn’t been disabled. This may interfere with the Wi-Fi connection of the dash cam and result in dropouts or connection issues. Before connecting to your dash cam, turn off all of your phone’s Wi-Fi connections.

4. Make sure the iOS “Wi-Fi Assist” or the Android “Smart Network Switch” (newer Android versions) is turned OFF.

This function helps to keep your phone’s internet connection strong so you may stay online at all times. However, this function flits back and forth between “Your mobile data and spotty Wi-Fi networks to keep a steady internet connection. Your phone may switch to using mobile data if these capabilities are enabled and you are connected to the WiFi network of your dash cam. When it does this, your Dash Cam’s Wi-Fi connection is terminated, causing the Dash Cam App to stop working. Before connecting your Dash Cam WiFi to your smartphone, make sure this feature is turned off to prevent Dash Cam App dropouts.

Disable Wi-Fi Assist if you’re an iOS user:

*Check Settings > Cellular if you can’t find iPhone Wi-Fi Assist under Mobile Settings.

De-select or disable “Smart Network Switch” or “Adaptive Wi-Fi” from your Wi-Fi settings page if you’re an Android user.

How to disable Adaptive Wi-Fi on more recent versions of Android:

5. Turn on your dash camera and watch as it begins to record.

6. Press the Wi-Fi button on the dash cam to instruct it to transmit a Wi-Fi signal.

Some Dash Cam models have Wi-Fi turned on by default; in the absence of such devices, Wi-Fi must be activated by pressing a button. You typically hear a chime or notification that Wi-Fi has been activated after pushing the Wi-Fi button. There may also be an indication light that turns on when Wi-Fi is turned on.

7. On your smartphone, go to the Wi-Fi settings page and search for the Dash Cam name (or ssid)

When the Dash Cam Wi-Fi signal is detected by your phone, it will appear on your phone’s Wi-Fi list. The brand name is typically followed by a string of random characters on Dash Cam Wi-Fi SSIDs, such as BlackSys-5IA3RD or QviaA-2IFRW8.

8. When prompted, choose the Dash Cam ssid and input the default password.

Usually, the manual or sticker on the dash cam will contain the default password. Usually, the default password is 8 characters or numbers long.

9. After you have correctly provided the password, the Dash Cam ssid should say “attached to or comparable

10. You may use the Dash Cam App and enjoy its functions now that you are connected.

11. Disconnect your phone’s Dash Cam Wi-Fi when you’re done using the App and want to resume using your mobile data.

To achieve this, either push the Dash Cam’s Wi-Fi button once more or turn off the Dash Cam’s Wi-Fi connection on your phone. Wi-Fi options

Note: Changing the Dash Cam Wi-Fi name (ssid) is not advised as it may confuse the camera and degrade the signal. We advise changing the Dash Cam Wi-Fi password or Wi-Fi name (ssid) to default if you changed them and are having problems. You can do this by either:

a. Restoring the settings to their original state. If you can’t access the App, you may still accomplish this using the specific PC viewer for the Dash Cam (model dependent)

Why won’t my phone and dash cam connect?

  • Make sure the XVIEW XV22 Dash Cam App is installed on your smartphone.
  • Make sure WiFi is enabled in your mobile settings, then choose your dash camera from the list of available devices.
  • Make sure the device’s password is one you typed correctly (12345678).
  • If the device is still having trouble connecting, consider erasing the dash cam from the phone’s settings, resetting both the dash cam and the phone, and trying again.
  • Verify that the app has the most recent version and that your phone has the most recent OS update.

Step 1: Remove the Memory Card

Depending on the kind of dashcam you own, this step may differ. Before removing the memory card, just make sure your car is parked and that the dashcam is switched OFF.

Step 2: Insert Memory Card Into Adapter

For Micro SD cards only, follow these instructions. Put the SD adapter that came with your memory card into the Micro SD slot with care. Some memory card readers don’t require an adaptor and can accept Micro SD cards directly.

Step 3: Insert Memory Card Into Card Reader

You need to utilize a Memory Card Reader to transfer the dashcam videos to your PC. A built-in SD memory card reader is available on several PCs (see 1st picture below). You must utilize a USB Memory Card Reader (see second image below) if your computer does not already have one built in.

Place the memory card physically into the appropriate slot on the memory card reader (or the adapter containing the card).

Step 4: Copy Video Files to your PC

After inserting the memory card, a “AutoPlay” window ought to appear shortly. Choose “Open folder to view files” from the menu.

You should now be viewing the memory card’s data. Most of the time, all that is present is a folder with an unusual name, such “DSC000” or “DCIM”:

You will only see one icon that allows you to launch the video player software if your dashcam includes a software video player. To launch the application and watch your videos, double-click the icon.

You will see a list of video files if your dashcam does not include a software video player:

Select each video file with the mouse. Drag the video files to your PC while continuing to hold down the left mouse button. We advise dragging them into your documents’ “Videos” folder.

Simply double-click any individual video file in the folder where you just copied your movies to start watching your recording! Please refer to our How-To on playing back dashcam video files if you encounter any difficulties.

The Toyota Smart Device Link is easy to use.

  • After providing access, select the Menu button of the LCD, go to Apps and choose Apple CarPlay. Now, you may access a few of your smartphone’s apps from the dashboard’s user interface. You are prepared and all set.

To integrate Android-Auto:

  • Utilize the Google Play Store to get the Android Auto application. Make sure to accept the conditions granting Android Auto access to the functions and apps on your smartphone.
  • Ensure that your car is parked. The LCD monitor on your dashboard should now be turned on.

Do dash cameras require Wi-Fi?

Smartphones can be integrated with dash cams thanks to their wi-fi capabilities. In contrast to a typical wi-fi network signal that provides internet access, this one is only intended to link the smartphone and dash cam.

After connecting and launching the dash cam’s app, you may view, download, and modify settings all from the app. This is a big advantage because it eliminates the need to insert the SD card into a computer. The phone can be used for everything.

This is important if, for example, a police officer is on the scene investigating an accident and needs to check up video or save video as soon as possible to prevent overwriting. If you return to your car after it has been parked and discover damage, you may instantly review the dash cam film to see what happened so that you are aware of the precise details of the incident.
