Calculate how simple it would be to go beyond the rated maximum. With its fragile sheet metal, ultra-soft suspension, short wheelbase, and low-traction standard tires, the Yaris is just not built to tow. You see what I mean?

I thought I’d provide an update on towing objects behind a Yaris. I have transported counter tops using the 4×8 Harbor Freight trailer.
I’ve got 24 sheets of drywall here, total weight with trailer is about 1250 pounds. The trailer had a good tongue weight, and starting and stopping felt good. I did slow down and anticipate stops. There was very little clutch slippage.
Eight used railroad ties were the greatest cargo behind this Yaris (previously rained on). These things weigh a much! I am unsure of the weight but would guess that it is around 1500 lbs with the trailer. I would only want as much space behind the Yaris as this. To start the car, the clutch slip was more obvious. Rolling through was no problem. With this, the journey was brief and required plenty of anticipatory stops, the application of hazards when ascending a slope for safety, as well as speed restriction. It did slow me down more than normal to be damp outside.
The Yaris is excellent for towing, so when I’m transporting a heavy load, I just go solo. Now, if anyone plans to attempt this close to a mountain range, get trailer brakes or, even better, don’t try! I wouldn’t try to travel this far unless I was merely towing a lighter weight. The 1250 pounds of drywall did seem extremely comfortable on a long trip, but I would only want 900 pounds on the back to be safe and have a safer stopping distance. Obviously, I would haul less if there were three big guys in the car with me. Be careful!
