The 2019 RAV4 Hybrid has an EPA rating of 40 mpg overall, 38 mpg on the highway, and 41 mpg in city driving. It is the most economical compact crossover offered in two- or four-wheel drive as a result.
The hybrid AWD system from Toyota is to blame. There is no mechanical connection between the gas engine and the back wheels, which are operated by an electric motor. When rear traction is required, the RAV4 Hybrid’s power-management computer determines when it is necessary; otherwise, it conserves fuel by sending all power to the front wheels. However, the driver can occasionally activate the back wheels by pressing a button.
