Why Are BMW X5 So Cheap?

The short answer is that they lack a true enthusiast market to support them, and BMW actively lowers resale value by making highly generous…

Lease payouts

The oversupply of BMWs on the used market is one factor contributing to their low price. Similar to other products, when there is a surplus and a decrease in demand, the price of the commodity falls. If you’ve ever looked at a new BMW, you’ll note that practically every model has excellent lease offers. But what takes place when those vehicles are rented, returned, and then traded in?

BMW lease returns are normally either sold at auction or offered for sale as certified pre-owned vehicles on dealer lots. Additionally, when dealer lots are overflowing with CPO vehicles, it lowers the cost of the vehicles not just for dealerships but also for individual sellers. And whether you’re a dealer or an individual selling a car on the street, you must price the vehicle you’re selling in accordance with the going rates in the market in order to maintain a competitive edge.

Why Do Used BMWs Cost So Little?

Every so often, one of my friends from college or graduate school comes up to me and asks for advice on car purchases. I used to flip cars in college and worked as a mechanic for a year in graduate school, so I’m usually the “car guy” that my friends turn to.

A friend of mine test drove a 2016 BMW 328i with 28,000 miles on it a few months ago. He adored the way the car handled and how it drove. However, the fact that this BMW, which originally cost around $40,000, was now on the market for $20,500 was what he really couldn’t believe about the vehicle and the reason he was speaking to me.

So, the logical question that my friend posed and one that I frequently hear from others is, “Why are secondhand BMWs so cheap?” Km cannot be used as an excuse because this example had very little mileage and had been well-kept in a garage, and I have seen many more instances of incredibly affordable used BMWs. Age isn’t a factor because, at just a little over three years old, this BMW shouldn’t have depreciated that much.

Used BMWs are inexpensive because they lose value far more quickly than the majority of other vehicles. They depreciate quickly due to the high cost of labor for German luxury car repairs, the fact that maintenance costs start to rise significantly once BMWs pass the 50 or 60k mile mark, and the fact that BMW parts are significantly more expensive than those for American or Japanese vehicles.

Are BMW X5 repairs expensive?

We looked at how frequently the vehicle required major unplanned repair over a three-year period to determine the frequency of major maintenance. This “serious” maintenance item is a costly system breakdown that needs to be repaired (often a part or component costing above $1,000).

It should be emphasized that even while we analyze this data by make and model, driving style, vehicle condition, and mileage undoubtedly affect outcomes. Different frequencies of maintenance are needed depending on the vehicle. While newer cars can go longer between services, older vehicles may require more frequent maintenance.

The frequency score can be used to determine how long a vehicle can go without maintenance. A frequency score reveals how frequently a certain vehicle needs major repair over a three-year period. If an automobile has a maintenance frequency score of 3, for instance, it needs major repairs every year because the score is calculated over a three-year period. The longer it can go without major maintenance services, the closer the frequency score is to 0.

The frequency score for a BMW X5 is 2.4899999999999998. This suggests that the BMW X5 is significantly worse than normal as the industrial average is 1.3. The breakdown of all manufacturers and models is shown in the chart below.

It’s important to note that there are many trustworthy cars that could also need frequent, yet reasonably priced maintenance. For instance, many domestic brands have higher maintenance visits but lower overall costs (since labor and parts expense are typically cheaper for domestic brands). This doesn’t imply that cars break down less frequently, but it does show that when they do, the problems are usually fairly simple to remedy, which is perhaps even more significant.

Better than the BMW X5 or the Audi Q5?

The BMW X5 might be a better choice if you’re seeking for an SUV with spirited engine specifications. However, the Q5 might be a better choice if you’re searching for a car that will go the additional mile because of its more fuel-efficient petrol alternatives. The usual EPA estimates for the BMW X5 are 21 city and 26 highway MPG.

Is the BMW X5 simple to keep up?

During the first ten years of use, a BMW X5 will require roughly $18,389 in maintenance and repairs.

This is $2,675 over the industry standard for luxury SUV models. Additionally, there is a 54.61% possibility that an X5 will need a significant repair during that time. Compared to similar vehicles in its sector, this is 15.05% worse. The following graph shows how these expenses and the likelihood of repairs will rise over time.

Is the BMW X5 a trustworthy vehicle?

The BMW X5: Is it Reliable? The expected reliability rating for the 2022 BMW X5 is 77 out of 100. J.D. Power predicts that reliability scores will range from 91 to 100, with 91 to 100 being the best, 81 to 90 being great, 70 to 80 being medium, and 0-69 being fair and below average.

Is the BMW X5 a quality SUV?

If you have the money, the BMW X5 is a good choice among midsize luxury SUVs. Prices start at $61,600 and reach six figures when fully loaded. The BMW X5 is among the greatest midsize luxury SUVs available today.

The BMW X5 uses a lot of petrol.

The X5 achieves an EPA-estimated 21 city and 26 highway MPG with its regular powertrain or an EPA-estimated 30-mile all-electric range with its plug-in hybrid option. If you’re interested in an amazing gas mileage, you’ll be delighted to know this.

Is the BMW X5 a quick vehicle?

Three different powertrains, each connected with a different model, are available for the 2023 X5. X5s with the sDrive40i or xdrive40i badge are equipped with a 335-hp inline-six turbocharger. A turbocharged inline-six and an electric motor provide the plug-in hybrid xDrive45e a combined 389 horsepower. That engine propelled an X5 to 60 mph on our test track in just 4.7 seconds. (We also tried the 40i, which completed a sprint to 60 mph in in 4.8 seconds.) Last but not least, the M50i can go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds thanks to its 523 horsepower twin-turbo V-8. An eight-speed automatic transmission is mated to each of the three powertrains, and none of them will leave drivers lacking for acceleration in almost any situation. The X5’s smooth ride, secure handling, and improved steering—which feels more connected and direct but is still not quite what we’d call sporting—are all significant upgrades over the previous generation model. Although it’s a close race, the Audi Q7 still beats the X5 in this department. When you throw the X5 into a sharp turn, it maintains its grip with ease and rewards the driver with a level of predictability that is lacking in the GLE-class. And if you need to tow, be aware that the X5 has a strong 7200 pounds of maximum towing capacity, regardless of the engine it has.

Which BMW X5 engine is the most trustworthy?

Well, there are a lot of engines available for the X5 of the E70 generation. Each gasoline engine has a good number of issues. However, we advise staying away from the 50i model equipped with the N63 engine. It is the original N63 engine from the E70, which had a lot of problems. The F15 and G05’s later N63 engines offer a notable reliability improvement. The N52 and N62 engines with natural aspiration are probably your best chance for dependability. The N55 engine in the X5 35i versions should be reliable, however there are a few frequent (and pricey) oil leaks in the engine. The X5S63 M’s engine is a robust and dependable engine. However, the X5big M’s brakes, tires, etc. make routine maintenance pricey.

Aside from its engines, the E70 X5 is a fairly dependable vehicle. When compared to the earlier E53, they do contain a few extra electronics. As they age, BMWs can develop electrical gremlins, so keep that in mind. The E70’s steering, brakes, suspension, and transmission are all quite dependable. Additionally, the engines are all excellent on the inside. The components immediately surrounding them, such as the water pumps, expansion tanks, coolant hoses, and seals, are what are problematic. If you know how to do it yourself, most of this stuff isn’t too expensive to fix.

The E70 X5 scores a “OK” overall for dependability. The more expensive parts, such as the transmissions and engine internals, are robust. Everything that surrounds the engine has the potential to become pricey. Additionally, the early E70 machines are getting on in age, which may necessitate more maintenance and repairs.

Is Range Rover an upgrade over X5?

It would be quite close if the Range Rover V8 and the XDrive50i were to compete in a drag race. The BMW X5 narrowly beats the Range Rover to 62 mph with a time of 5 seconds. Due to their lightweight construction, the BMW is just somewhat quicker off the line, but both vehicles are shockingly quick once you put the pedal to the metal.

When it comes to diesel alternatives, the X5 X50d M Sport is a rather unexpected option because it provides the Range Rover TDV6’s efficiency while having the V8’s far less efficient 0-62mph speed. However, as you move up the range, the gap narrows between the BMW XDrive30d and the Range Rover SDV6 turbo diesel alternatives.

Thanks to the Adaptive M suspension, the BMW handles amazingly well for a vehicle of size, but the Range Rover is just as comfortable. When traveling on a twisty road, the X5 handles corners better than the less maneuverable Range Rover. But when you take both vehicles off the road, the Range comes out on top because to its higher ground clearance and cutting-edge 4×4 technology.
