Every so often, one of my friends from college or graduate school comes up to me and asks for advice on car purchases. I used to flip cars in college and worked as a mechanic for a year in graduate school, so I’m usually the “car guy” that my friends turn to.
A friend of mine test drove a 2016 BMW 328i with 28,000 miles on it a few months ago. He adored the way the car handled and how it drove. However, the fact that this BMW, which originally cost around $40,000, was now on the market for $20,500 was what he really couldn’t believe about the vehicle and the reason he was speaking to me.
So, the logical question that my friend posed and one that I frequently hear from others is, “Why are secondhand BMWs so cheap?” Km cannot be used as an excuse because this example had very little mileage and had been well-kept in a garage, and I have seen many more instances of incredibly affordable used BMWs. Age isn’t a factor because, at just a little over three years old, this BMW shouldn’t have depreciated that much.
Used BMWs are inexpensive because they lose value far more quickly than the majority of other vehicles. BMW’s best-selling car is the X3, which recently received a midcycle update for the 2022 model year. The venerable little luxury SUV is still quite sporty and enjoyable to drive, and as a two-row, five-seater vehicle, it provides adequate storage and fuel efficiency.

Timing and oil pump drive chain issues are common with the BMW X3’s N20 (Turbo 4-Cylinder) engine. BMW did, however, alter the timing chain guide in 2015 and later models to solve this issue. However, timing and oil pump drive chain failure are frequent in early BMW X3 vehicles from 2012 to 2015.
On average, the timing chain problem manifests itself after 80,000 kilometers. Look for any of the symptoms listed by BMW in their service notice to identify this issue: a whining sound coming from the lower portion of the engine, close to the oil pump, that gets louder as the engine RPM rises.
This issue was brought on by the engine oil pump chain drive sprockets experiencing excessive wear as a result of a design defect. The engine oil pump drive chain module, timing chain, timing chain tensioner, slide rail, tensioning rail, and guide rail were all replaced as part of BMW’s warranty extension, extending the parts’ warranties to 7 years or 70,000 miles.
For many owners, this warranty extension wasn’t sufficient. These owners didn’t receive reimbursement even though some of them had previously spent up to $900 on repairs to replace the timing chain and oil pump drive chain. As a result, a class action lawsuit was filed and was successful. The settlement included payment for current and anticipated future repairs.
