Make sure your current remote key fob actually needs to be replaced before spending money on a new one. If it’s not working, the battery can just be dead.
You might be able to skip this step if your BMW has a key fob that you need to place in a slot on the steering column. Many of these key fobs include rechargeable batteries that are intended to be charged automatically while in use; as soon as the key fob is inserted into the ignition slot, the charging process begins.
However, if you have a more current fob, it is possible that the battery is a non-rechargeable CR 2450 and will need to be changed from time to time. Simply remove the rear panel of your fob and replace the coin cell battery to complete this easy DIY project.
A battery should last one to three years before needing to be replaced, depending on your car and usage.

The BMW key fob can it be recharged?
The BMW remote key fob may have a rechargeable battery depending on the type, or it may have a long-life battery that may require replacement sometimes, possibly once every few years depending on use.
In cars with removable batteries, all you have to do is remove the backplate of the key fob and change the CR2450 or CR2032 coin cell. Batteries that cannot be recharged are frequently encountered in key fobs for BMW keyless start.
Some key fobs that must be put into your car’s ignition slot, like as those in E60 and E90 vehicles without Comfort Access, have rechargeable batteries. In this situation, the ignition slot serves as both a charger and a battery booster.
Even while a fob will endure for at least a few years, all rechargeable batteries eventually deteriorate. Batteries in rechargeable fobs cannot be changed since they are soldered into place and glue-sealed. You’ll need a replacement BMW key fob if your battery can no longer function.
I recently purchased a new key fob for my Comfort Access equipped F30. According to the dealership, the key has been coded and should operate without any issues. Sadly, such was not the case. The car doesn’t respond to any of the buttons. The battery was charged when I checked it. I also experimented with starting the car with a different keyfob by placing the new keyfob next to the steering wheel, where the key logo is located, as I had done with prior BMW models. The new key is still not recognized by it.
Anyone have any suggestions, or should I take this back to the dealership? I appreciate it.
Just wanted to give an update.
Today I scheduled a time at the dealership. One of the mechanics entered my car after I pulled it in and used my second (new) set of keys. He instructed me to move a little distance away, and he soon had the new set of keys working.
He only needed to make sure the primary key was far away from the vehicle. Put the new key fob near the key logo next to the steering wheel and give the car a few tries to start. When you try to start the car again after it first says “key is not detected,” it will ultimately identify the new key fob and program it appropriately. CA also functions normally; it’s that easy.
I really value this forum. It eventually worked after several unsuccessful tries to pair or program a replacement key.
Unstable buttons
Another possibility is that the buttons themselves are the problem. Most remote controls include rubberized buttons, which can become loose or worn out over time. A
If you see that one or more of the buttons won’t pop out properly or are stuck, take apart the casing, take the buttons out, clean them, and then reassemble the remote. You might need to purchase a new remote fob if this still doesn’t work.
Key Learnings Your remote key fob experiences a lot of wear and tear, which may eventually loosen or break some of the internal contacts, leading to a possible malfunction even after the battery has been changed.
Why won’t my BMW key fob function now that the battery has been changed?
Your key fob may not function properly for a number of reasons. A key fob may need to be reprogrammed in order for the car to detect it, but some of the most frequent issues are with the battery contact terminals or the buttons themselves.
Your remote key fob needs to be attached to a receiver in the car in order for it to function properly. You’ll need to reset it if the paired connection between the key and the automobile is disrupted when the battery in the fob is changed.
Why does my key fob only occasionally function?
Your remote may occasionally operate erratically. Start by changing the battery because this is typically an indication that it needs to be recharged. While the remote is still operational, it is always simpler to complete this.
Why won’t my key fob open the door to my car?
It can be quite aggravating and even hazardous if your key fob won’t open the door to your car, especially if you have a young child or pet locked inside. Here are a few explanations for why your smart or remote key fob isn’t opening the door, along with solutions.
Any of the following could be the source of your issue if nothing happens when you push the unlock button on your remote control or key fob:
Your remote control or smart key fob’s battery is either dead or too low to maintain a strong signal. Replace the battery by opening the fob.
Your vehicle’s receiver(s) for the keyless entry system may not be receiving the signal from the key fob. When pressing the unlock button, try holding the fob close to the door handle. If it opens the door, there might be an issue with the key fob’s battery, the keyless entry antenna, or the wiring.
The unlock button on the key fob itself can be problematic. Try the panic, trunk release, and lock buttons. If the other buttons function properly, a faulty unlock button is the issue. You’ll require a fresh key fob (which will have to be programmed to your vehicle). The fob may be damaged, the keyless entry antenna, or the wiring may be at fault if none of the other buttons function after you have tried a new battery in the fob.
Your key fob’s entry code is missing. Every time you use the key fob to unlock or start your car, the rolling code that many automobiles employ changes. It can be necessary to have the fob reprogrammed by a car dealer if a communication error has corrupted the coding inside.
The electric door locks might be broken. The power door locks could not be able to unlock due to a problem with the wiring or control circuitry or even a blown fuse. To find the defect, the electrical system will need to be further diagnosed.
Your car’s battery is nearly dead or very low. Before the power doors may unlock, the car battery may need to be changed or given a jump start. Of course, you won’t be able to open the hood until you find another way to enter the car.
What may make a key fob malfunction?
a problem with the start button or keyless entry system The keyless entry system’s antenna or wiring issue, malfunctioning software, a faulty circuit board, or a broken start button are all potential offenders. Have the car checked to see whether it requires any repairs.
Will a dead key fob prevent a BMW from starting?
You won’t be able to use keyless entry or remote unlocking if your BMW has Comfort Access if the battery in your key fob has died. You can still enter and manually start your automobile, though.
Press and hold the key release button at the remote fob’s base while unlocking the door of your car, then slide out the internal key blade. This can be used in place of a standard key to unlock your car. You can locate a little hole on the bottom of the handle if the keyhole is hidden on your car door. Use the key blade to pry off the trim panel and expose the keyhole by inserting it into the hole.
Once you’re inside, put your remote key fob in the ignition slot or, if your car doesn’t have one, press it up against the steering column’s key markings. If your key fob dies, you will still be able to start your BMW using the start/stop button on the dashboard.
How can I sync my BMW key fob again?
While keeping the unlock button depressed, press the BMW logo three times on your BMW key fob. After pressing the BMW logo three times, release the unlock button. Once the ignition is turned on, your new key should be associated with your BMW.
How can I tell if the battery in my BMW key fob is low?
However, your car will alert you before you need to employ this technique. Your BMW’s iDrive display screen will notify you as soon as the battery level starts to drop that a replacement is going to be necessary shortly.
How do I use a physical key to start my BMW?
Nowadays, keyfobs are used in most vehicles instead of their metal equivalents. But just in case, BMWs come with an emergency key in the keyfob. To start your BMW with a mechanical key, adhere to these steps:
- Push the button on the back of your key fob and pull the emergency key out of the key fob first.
- The driver’s side door can be unlocked with the use of the key. Although the automobile alarm might sound, don’t be alarmed. When you start the automobile, it everything turns off.
- Insert your key if your BMW has an ignition. If it doesn’t, insert the key fob into the slot marked with a key next to the steering wheel.
- Press the Stop/Start button after holding down the brake.
Your automobile ought to start once you’ve completed those instructions! If it still doesn’t work, your key may be broken or the ignition module may be malfunctioning. At that time, you ought to take your car to a mechanic so they can look at it.

The cost of a BMW key fob
The price of a 2020 Toyota Sienna fob was comparable. Dealers, however, gave prices as low as $150 to replace a key fob for a 2017 Honda Accord. A number of BMW retailers claimed that the additional security features built into the 2020 X5 key fob justifies the roughly $500 they spend to replace and program one.
