Hi everybody, I just bought a CPO X5 last week. I have been enjoying it thus far after a couple decades without a BMW.
As usual, I fully washed the X5 once I got home from the dealership, giving it a full clay bar treatment and wax. I also removed the wheels so I could clean the inside of each rim.
I noted that all 4 wheels have the markings “China,” “BMW Mold 1#,” and “ZCW.” Since it has been a long since I owned a BMW, I had believed that BMW wheels were only produced in Germany, Italy, or Mexico. Please review the images below.
The X5’s price was set based on the assumption that the wheels were genuine OEM, which added a few thousand dollars to the X5’s selling price. I’m not trying to start a conversation about the quality of wheels made in China or even if they are replicas or OEM; I simply want to know if they are.
It’s excellent if they are genuine OEM, which is what I hope. If they’re not, I’ll speak with the dealer to get them replaced with genuine OEM wheels.
For some M models, I believe they were built in Taiwan; I’m not sure about China. Maybe the prior owner had custom wheels, and to return the car when the lease was over, he or she bought some China reproductions.
To be fair, the dealership had no other way to verify the authenticity but to check for a component number imprinted inside, which appears to be 6853960, taken from the back wheel in the picture.
Since replicas were a little heavier in those days, the only surefire way to certify was to weigh the rim in comparison to an established OEM rim.
If they didn’t produce this 451 wheel in a replica, then that will have to do for the time being. I’m not familiar with the stampings on the inside of a replica rim.
I came up with another approach to try to authenticate my wheels because I haven’t been able to find any other wheels with the identical interior stampings as mine after looking through member postings and ebay listings. Are my wheels simply produced at a separate factory than every other set of style 451 wheels, then?
I suppose I’d like to see another set of 451 wheels from a known original owner with my same stampings (since mine is CPO).
